Re: Official Bored at Work / Off-Topic Chat Thread II
It is Veterans Day today, EST.
Oh, and also some new games that I don't care about might have just been released, not that anybody cares about that more than the reason why they get to take today off, inevitably to play those games, am I right?

If the notation isn't clear, there's no clear answer. You can even put the equation into two different calculators and they'll give different answers.
There is a standardized interpretation of the notation that returns the result 9. If you have a device that returns the result 1, you should stop using it. The "clear" notation for this would be to use a horizontal bar for division and put all the dividend terms in the numerator and all the divisor terms in the denominator, but since obviously most calculators do not take input in this format it's important to have a standard set of rules by which all devices evaluate this formula the same. People would die otherwise.

The string of characters "1/2x" is interpreted by the above conventions as (1/2)x. The contrary interpretation should be written explicitly as 1/(2x). Again, the use of brackets will clarify the meaning and should be used if there is any chance of misinterpretation.
I stand by my initial statement that this formula gives people cancer.

I like this answer:
I’m a math professor, and my view is that although the standard convention, if applied precisely and rigorously, does give an unambiguous procedure to follow, nobody, and that includes professional mathematicians, would ever write a formula like this. This is mostly because, after about 3rd grade, none of us ever use the division symbol ever again

So,
lol@ References for Taskmage. Not to bust balls, but Taskmage is not impartial and has been a total troll in the past, and it's not surprising to see his hand-picked mods singing his praises. As much as I'd like to voice my opinion, as if anybody really cares, I'd equally not like to cock block a job opportunity so I guess I'm compromising by discussing it here, beneath spoiler tags.
Re: Official Bored at Work / Off-Topic Chat Thread II
If you want to state your opinion, I'm not going to delete your post or come down on you or anything. I'd rather have a dozen honest appraisals than a handful of glowing references, tbh, and if you have a general criticism about the way I do things here then I'd like to hear it regardless (though I don't promise I'll agree or change). If you'd rather keep your opinion to yourself to help me get the job, that's fine too and I appreciate the courtesy.
Re: Official Bored at Work / Off-Topic Chat Thread II
Btw, I don't pretend to be impartial. I don't particularly like you, Dak, and I've got issues with BBQ and Raydeus lately as well as one or two others. Recognizing I have biases is the whole reason I decided to add new moderators, so I can defer to them in situations I don't trust myself to be completely fair. That I'm friends with the new mods looks a little self-serving, I'll grant you, but I think it's only natural to choose people to work with that you like and respect, and moreover I can guarantee I the amount of consideration I gave to who I should mod and whether I should mod them was unprecedented in the history of this site. >_> The important thing is their personal biases and interpretation of the rules is different from mine. Yyg and I got into an argument about the rules just days before I modded him, and that just made me feel better about my decision.
Anyway, that went overlong, but the point is I think I do a good job here, even the people I don't like I still respect and try to serve fairly, and I believe, perhaps naively, that even the people here who don't like me at least respect me back and I trusted any comments in the references thread would be fair. I think of all the people here, you probably have the lowest opinion of me and the fact that you hesitated to mention it vindicates my trust.
Re: Official Bored at Work / Off-Topic Chat Thread II
The fact of the matter is in any place of power you can't please everyone and you will always have people who will do their best to undermine it. We get it all the time on the Uk travian forums that I am a moderator on, you make a decission about someone that another doesn't like and that person ends up making rant posts about corrpution etc just because they didn;t get their own way, its sad but unfortunately its the territory that goes with it.
Incidently Friday was my last day at work so i am now officially unemployed and worked for the company less than 2 years so i get no redundancy payout. So job centre on Monday to find out how much dole money i will get and time to rein in the horns on spending and everyone will have to make do with a hand made present for xmas.
I can guarantee I the amount of consideration I gave to who I should mod and whether I should mod them was unprecedented in the history of this site. >_>
What he's saying is "Hey guys, remember Sweet Kitty? Remember Sweet Kitty? Not my fault! Totally PiNG's. Totally PiNG's doing guys. At least I was a bit more careful."
Anyway, I wish TM the best in this, but I don't really feel comfortable acting as a reference purely because I think that even our worst residents need very little moderation, so frankly other than cleaning up spam there's not really much of a community to be managing. It's easy to be part of a community that you've been in for years, full of relatively mature people (even Raydeus and BBQ are erudite compared to the average denizen of any other MMO forum), allied out of a common interest. In a positions like that, though, it is a job; that alone entails a different view of your population. In a lot of cases you'll be treated like absolute shit by trolls that change IP addresses simply to come back again and again and harass you; the community could collectively decide you're a dick; it's just a totally different atmosphere. I'm not saying he can't handle it, just that it's absolutely apples and oranges with a job like that; it's like the difference between being mayor of Cedar Falls and being mayor of Detroit or Phoenix. Yeah, you get to wear a funny sash and carry around ornate but useless keys to cities, but the problems you're tasked with are entirely different.
Also, he's got a kid, guys. It's really cool for a six year old to go to show and tell and say "My daddy's a police officer", "a lawyer", "a banker"; how the hell does a kid explain "My dad tells people not to be mean on the internet"?
