Are you saying a tower of hats doesn't look good with everything?

I never understood this whole fashion thing....

I wear what is comfortable to ME. Not what is comfortable to OTHERS. I will wear what I WANT, not what others want me to.

If I feel comfortable in a tank top, and shorts, by god, I'm going to wear tank top and shorts!

You know what the solution to all of this is, right?

FYI - Looking good is not always about looking good to others.

What I'm saying is that the idea that hats are a useless and separate item in a persons wardrobe needs to be changed.

I also said that dressing like slobs needs to go too.

I think you're underestimating how much self-image is tied to personal appearance. Look good, feel good; look sharp, feel sharp. Dress to engender whatever qualities you want to reinforce in yourself, to yourself, not just to others. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it can make to your mood and productivity to be able to look in a mirror and think "looking good" even if you never have to interact with another person.

For the record, this is where I got my Maat's Cap.

I'm not particularly fond of the brand, but I do like how the hat looks on me. For what it's worth.

Mhurron, I'm not saying they are not attractive, useful, and in many cases, almost essential. I'm just saying that not enough people can manage the basics, much less hats.

So...scars. Apparently I'm bringing scars back, as I just fell walking down the street a bit ago and now both hands and knees are bloody. :/

edit: Takelli, how other people react to you and the way you dress has more to do with how you feel in your clothing than you might think. But yes, one key component of dressing well is feeling good in the clothing that you are wearing.

You know what? This. It's something I've only learned relatively recently not to underestimate (some time in the past couple of years?), but TM is absolutely right in that, if nothing else, a good self-image is just as important, and you don't even have to step too heavily on the toes of practicality for it, either.

Of course, your appearance to others is (somewhat unfortunately) not always a trivial matter, so you may as well leverage it to your advantage as much as you can within reason.

Shows like "How do I look" and "what not to wear" are, on the one hand, pretty fucking terrible. But on the other, they do make some good points about how just because you're comfortable in the clothing you wear, doesn't mean you're "comfortable." Surprise, most people care at least the tiniest bit how others react to them, and again, surprise, it affects how they feel. Clothing is a part of that.

So the clothing must be comfortable both physically and psychologically is what you're saying? That makes sense.

Well obviously if you can't master walking, hats may be too advanced for you.

Also, hats might be too much for you of you buy glasses like THAT.

Slightly more seriously though, the problem you're talking about is more linked to societies acceptance of slobbiness.

I wish there was less disconnect between clothing's appearance and functionality.

While I can look pretty good in a suit and tie, it's hardly a practical outfit and finding one that fits just right is like trying to find a virgin in a whorehouse. Even with a tailor modifying the suit I still have trouble finding one that fits well enough that I can forget I'm wearing something more formal.

My other outfits have the exact opposite problem. They're completely practical and comfy, but they don't exactly scream "sharp dresser".

There's a middle ground out there, but it takes some effort to find and situations that call for such an approach are rare for me personally to encounter.

My normal look consists of my vibrams, BDU pants worn with a belt, and some t-shirt that was more than likely picked out for me by a relative at Hot Topic because they only know me well enough to go for video game related objects and I'm too old to get things that aren't clothes for Christmas. Often I'll wear a bandanna to keep the hair out of my face. A more fashion-conscious person would probably throw up a little in their mouth if they saw me, but it's comfortable, functional, and I like the way I look and feel in it.

I don't get out of the house a lot, so I don't often have occasion to wear another style. I really need to find another one, though. When I do go to the symphony or some event with class, I want to dress to reflect a greater respect for the proceedings, but the few "nice" shirts and pants I have were all purchased before I had any clear self-image, and I don't feel like "me" when I'm wearing them.
