One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that moving, even to a cheaper area to live is fucking expensive. Not everyone can afford to just pull up sticks and leave to find another job.

I'd love to get a job at Google but I don't think I have enough projects on my resumé to impress them right now.

Had a classmate last semester who, though he had some ridiculous educational background (two masters, working on a doctorate in computer science) had the primary distinction of being a developer for porn applications on android; he got a job with Google. Google seems to want people who can A- Handle the obvious shit, B- Learn to handle the weird shit, C- Come up with new interesting shit.

Well, just don't forget to play the ethnic diversity card everywhere you go; even if you're not really ethnic

Was gonna ask why someone with two Master's and part of a Doctorate's is doing porn apps, but then I realized it's precisely because he's smart and knows where the money's at.

Actually, he's not at all intelligent outside computer science; definitely not savvy socially, and had absolutely no idea what he was doing in class. He seemed to invest a ton of time in trying to learn, while still doing absolutely horribly-- he also mentioned studying his ass off for interviews with google, and not feeling like he did well with them, so I doubt it's just a single bad subject. What I'm saying is, he puts in a ton of time and effort to make up for a lack of brains.

This isn't a peeve... so I'm putting it here.

I was asked to come into work today on my day off, to work from 9:00pm to 1:00am. I get in, turn on the computer and look at the remaining schedule. There is 1 plane left. It arrives at 1:00am. I'm sitting here doing nothing for 4 hours... on a holiday... for holiday pay. If I had known it was going to be this dead I would have taken my laptop in and camped some NMs while I waited. Shame...
