Supposedly the judges were conspiring. The girl who won gold in women's long performance basically came out of nowhere. She wasn't even the best Russia had and beat both the South Korean girl and a girl from Italy. From what I read the judges are drawn from a pool of 13 and 3 of the 4 that were drawn for that performance were all from countries that made up the former Soviet Union. Also talked about how the other Russian girl still ended up scoring higher than Wagner (U.S.) despite falling in both her performances. I'm tempted to chalk it up to bitterness b/w the two countries and U.S. just looking to bitch, but Russian judge conspiracies aren't without precedent. A Canadian judge recorded a Russian judge talking about cheating the results to help a Russian win back in Nagano and apparently it happened again in Salt Lake City. Either way it makes for good media drama since everyone here is getting tired of the speed skating team whine about their racing suits.

While acronyms should be punishable by bludgeoning almost universally, I don't see how they would help one cheat at ice skating.

I really don't like the new scoring system. It's all about racking up the points. Instead of having a maximum score you could hit, you basically have an infinite score. The technical aspect of the program is pretty cut and dried, X element is worth Y points, goofing subtracts Z points, etc. That's pretty simple and makes sense. But the artistic aspect of it is entirely too subjective. There aren't any elements, it's all "what they like."

I liked Yuna Kim's artistry much better. I know that I'm not a skater, but I was a dancer. I know about line and form of the body. Yuna's was better. Adelina (I think that's her name?) looked "tougher" and less artistic. She's very athletic and not quite as graceful. That should be a factor. And personally I would have taken points off for her tights coming up and exposing the white part of the boot. That's part of the artistry, she should have secured them better so as to prevent that from happening.

And yes, it really did bother me that she stumbled out of one of her jumps while Yuna Kim was practically perfect. Hell, Ashley Wagner (American) who got like 7th landed all of her jumps, a few of the people ahead of her fell. Straight up fucking fell. Degree of difficulty was lower but there should be a bonus for landing everything cleanly or something. If you fall, you should lose almost all of the points for the attempt.

I just hate the scoring system. When it was six judges awarding points out of 6 (amateur skating) or 10 (professional skating), you had a maximum reachable amount. It was still subjective, but it put more pressure on the technical side of things because you couldn't just be given an arbitrary number to "make up" for it on artistic merit alone. You'd cap out.

After the past year or two in the news and you don't know whar PED's are??? The acronym PED is almost as well known as STFU. Now STFU and GTFO if you don't know what PED's are...

I've never heard them referred to by the acronym until right this moment. So no, they are not as widespread and well known as STFU or GTFO. This is also why using acronyms should be punishable by bludgeoning.
