I don't actually work on the TV side of things so to be honest I have no fucking idea what their motivations are. Our department is a division of the corporation that owns this station and technically doesn't work for the station, we just kind of borrow their building.

But we do have a fairly large viewing area so I suppose there is some possibility that not everyone in the area would lose power. I'm told it's pretty standard for TV stations though, so whatever.

I haven't been in a rollover accent (knock on wood) but I've spun out on invisible ice more than a few times. Obviously not down here, here it's more like fender benders, they're practically a way of life here.

I have only had 2 accidents *touch wood* and both have been caused by drivers not paying any attention and driving into the back of me while I have been stationary at traffic lights that are on red. One I had to be cut out of as it was a boy racer being chased by the police as I was at university and had a banger and third party fire and theft insurance I got F all from it as the driver was uninsured and the polices conviction failed due to a technicality, not very nice but I knew the fire crews who cut me out.

For a moment, I thought he was the one being chased by police. I was like "huh, Jarre is more of a bad ass than expected."

I've been in a couple of minor car accidents as a kid, nothing exciting. Not sure if I mentioned it on here, but on January first this year, riding my bike down a major road, gear decided to snap (as in, the plastic on the lever) at speed, chain falls off and jams in the rear gears, I get lurched and only get enough control to lay the bike down and protect my pretty face. Smash into the road, immediately look for the scooters behind me, hoping I don't have to try to roll out from under the bike to dodge them; luckily they stopped.

Picked my bike and stuff up off the road. Thoughtful driver behind me stopped his car while I got myself up. Didn't waste his energy getting out of the vehicle, seeing if I was actually okay, but he stopped, which is apparently good enough for Taiwanese people*. I managed to remove a huge patch of skin from my right arm, right knee, and some minor injuries to my left hand and arm. The scarring is still very visible, especially my purple kneecap.

*: Side note, the Asian driver stereotype is partially true. In reality, the narrow alleys, abundant hazards in the roadway, winding mountain roads, scooters and so on make for most people who actually drive quickly becoming highly proficient, technically speaking. However, almost all of the drivers range from "no respect for the rules of the road" to "no respect for human life"; getting nearly plowed down is a daily ordeal here, but it is almost always 'nearly'. Taiwanese people just don't understand how to move from one place to another; if you can get them to sit down they're mostly good folks, but they have no idea how to navigate appropriately. On foot, they will move sideways and backwards without looking (had a guy nearly throw me off my bike doing this yesterday), walk four abreast down a sidewalk, ensuring you have to walk on the road to get around them, walk directly down the middle to keep any bikes or scooters from passing them, stay standing obliviously in aisles when you are clearly trying to walk past, etc. Bikes, scooters, and cars...

Let's put it this way. I was once walking down the street, and (one) a car decided to try to make a left turn after his light turned red, but before the other one turned green, (two) the other cars took their green light despite this guy trying to rush through the intersection, (three) the guy stops right there in the middle of the intersection, and to top it all off (four) the POLICE OFFICER STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE INTERSECTION SIMPLY OBSERVES THIS WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING.

Beautiful island, wonderful people, but oh my god they need to learn how to move around their environment.

Side side note: Japanese drivers have nearly the same technical proficiency, but they're Japanese so they're polite. Japanese roads are so nice.

I saw a video of a japanese fire truck on an emergency and above the sirens I could hear the officer in command on the loudspeaker , I can't understand it but think they are politely asking people to pull over so they can get past and thanking them after.

vid if anyone can translate what is being said.

My Japanese is admittedly poor but that's pretty much the gist of what's going on.

It's a lot better then what they do over here. Last time I had a Fire Truck go past in an emergency, I couldn't safely pull to the side of the road for another 300m or so, and was forced off the road and onto the pavement by said truck just decided to barge past. Then I got fined for driving on the fucking pavement due to "Driving without due care an attention".

That is absolutely the case. Last time I was in Osaka, an Ambulance went by a heavily used crosswalk, they politely asked on their loudspeaker for people to get out of their way, and everyone obliged. They thanked us as they passed.

Meanwhile in Taiwan, emergency vehicles receive ZERO special treatment. It's very, very common to see ambulances stuck behind traffic with their sirens blaring, when it would take all of 15 seconds out of someone's day to let them pass. I've even seen people cut them off.

I would take emergency vehicles getting people into bullshit traffic citations over a complete lack of priority for people who could die, any day of the week.

It's gonna be a close game. I've already told my coworkers that I plan to stream it in the background (though I will take my lunch for part of it).

I'm still pissed about yesterday's game, how the fuck do you blow that lead. -.-
