Obama wanting to wave his dick and his missiles in Assad's face is very much a U.S. thing. We were posturing to take military action before there was any word of chemical weapons being used.

Also: fuck the children. Why aren't we in Africa yet?

UNICEF - Press centre - 5,500 children die in Eastern and Southern Africa every day

The difference is that the above problem, while much greater, doesn't have a face, is harder to get people angry about, and can't be solved with a show of bravado and brute force. Still, think how many more lives might be saved if we deployed our resources in humanitarian support to Africa rather than invading and occupying another country. If it were a question of preventing the most children from dying horrible, preventable deaths, Syria wouldn't even be on the table. The focus on children is just being thrown out there to draw support from people who can't empathize with anything else about the problem.

chemical weapons is a crime against humanity. it is outlawed by every nation in the UN. you can't even use it when you are at war with another nation.

and not that it really matters, but your source is 8 years old, lol...

Oh oh, are we going to get into the discussion of what place has the most horrendous inhumane atrocities visited upon its populace now? Because I'm reasonably certain Africa beats out Syria on that count too.

If Obama or whoever doesn't think that the child death statistic would draw more support from people who would otherwise oppose action, they wouldn't even mention it. That doesn't make it less horrible that children died from chemical weapons, but you should recognize that this information is being used as a political tool.

no that's not the discussion we are having, it's something TM brought up that has nothing to do with what's going in Syria.

cid brought up Africa, you asked what relevance it has, I provided the source. The point in contention was that dying children could not be used to justify action on their own, and those deaths are merely being exploited rhetorically in the case of Syria. If it weren't so, we would be discussing action in Africa instead.

all communication in all different kinds of propoganda are used as political tools. i'm not even sure why that is part of the discussion either. all of that aside, a guy is using weapons that are outlawed by the UN and is killing innocent people. i for one dont think you sit by and watch as it continues. if he was using swords / guns and fighting the rebels that way it would just be considered him trying to quell the rebel uprising. the fact that he used rockets to fire chemical weapons into crowded city districts to kill innocent people is the problem.

"All that aside" is kindof the point. The issue on the table is of chemical weapons, and the repeated mention of the children involved is pure demagoguery, which cid found tasteless. In any case, it's not a basis for a rational conclusion.

The basis for a rational conclusion is a leader of a country is breaking UN laws by using outlawed chemical warefare. And it needs to stop. Now, he's not going to stop on his own, so a plan needs to be formulated on how to come to this conclusion.

So why isn't the UN enforcing it?
