I planned to be asleep now and wake up in around six hours. Hopefully the second part of the plan works out better than the first part.

Classes start for me on Monday. I'm looking forward to the new semester almost as much as to ARR's release.

It's why I like discussing and debating things with people like Taskmage or Armando. Regardless of what happens, I always end up learning something.

So if I could just blog a minute on a tangentially related subject, I have a huge crush on this person I met during the beta. She is just so sweet and kind and reserved, and she always speaks with the kind of precise grammar that I use on my smart days. I have been trying to keep a lid on it since I really do not want to screw things up with this person, but so far that has only meant flirting slightly less flagrantly than I would if I didn't have anxiety mixed in with my infatuation. I had resolved not to say anything about it, because let's be honest, it's an online relationship, and the incredibly small chance that anything would come of it is not worth the risk of losing this great friendship I have, but ...

Today she said something completely adorable, and I felt that any appropriately enthusiastic comment would blow my cover, so I just asked her, "Have I made it blatantly apparent than I have a huge crush on you?" She replied, "Not so obvious that I have noticed," which makes her at least as oblivious as I was in high school, but that just makes her cuter to me. She didn't say anything to further encourage me, but she didn't flip out or run away either, and we moved on and kept talking like nothing had happened. Considering I have ruined friendships and lost people dear to me by expressing romantic feelings when they were unwelcome, or taking a relationship in that direction when I absolutely shouldn't have, dispassionate acceptance in this circumstance counts as HUGE SUCCESS. Earlier she was telling me about telling her friends about something sweet I had done for her, so if that's the state of things and the only difference now is my feelings are on the table, then I'm ecstatic.

Here's the thing, though. I am pretty sure I have mentioned my wife and kids around her in the past, so I think she knows, but now I'm worried about mentioning it in case she doesn't. Which is exceeedingly awkward since twice today she's said something to which for any other person I would have replied "haha you're just like my wife" except now I feel like if I type the words "my wife" they will come out in 160 point bright red flashing caps, and I have pushed my luck on this front quite enough today already, thank you. So what I typed instead was "haha just like someone else I know," which is not a lie, but it absolutely is a deception, and deception is Bad News. I feel terrible about it, but RISK. Risk that it will screw things up right now, risk that it will screw things up later when it comes out, and it will come out, but today, after nearly losing her in my mind once already, I couldn't be honest.

Dude.
"I have a huge crush on you" can be a joke like thing to say that basically just says, "You're awesome." Having to explain later (when asked) that, yeah, your wife knows you get crushes on other people and is unbothered by it isn't really a big deal, *especially* in the context of internet.

I guess that would have occurred to me if I was in fact joking, and didn't mean something that to other people would be incompatible with the concept of marriage.

really, just say something is totally like your wife. It complimentary to your wife, it's honest, and you're clearly comparing her to someone you like enough to live with forever. It's a compliment.
unless she's going to get insanely jealous of me, which would be valuable info, yes?

Well, the ways in which she was totally like you were in being unable to tan and going half the day without remembering to eat, so not the MOST complimentary things.

The best way to lie is to tell the complete truth in such a way as no one will believe it.
this doesn't require an attempt to deceive, but it can work in your favor by making it clear a person is important to you while simultaneously making it clear that you are happy with where you are, so "happy with them" is not a reaction to missing something in your life and/or creating a way of blowing up your real life.
basically, everyone knows that happily married people don't blow up their lives with secret affairs and everyone knows that unhappily married people don't talk about their wife positively in casual conversation, so saying you have a crush on someone and casually mentioning your wife in conversation means that you are unlikely to be doing something stupid

if you ask 50 people what "cheating" is, maybe 5 of them would say that even talking to her past deciding she was sorta cute counted. And 5 would say that having a full on digital affair was not.
but all that won't be things someone *thinks* they'll be subconscious processes that will resolve themselves as their morals demand. 
most likely going with, "He must have been joking about that crush thing, because he's clearly cool with his wife."
