BBC News - Church plans to 'compete' Wonga out of business
So the Church of England planning to challenge Payday Loan lenders and loan sharks in general. While it is a really nice gesture and they actually have some pretty nice plans in place, I'm not sure if it is really sustainable for them given that the admin costs alone of short term loans will mean that they can only lose money on it. Personally if they are campaigning for what is morally right then surely they should instead be lobbying the Government to legislate for a proper living wage.
Still, from my personal secular point of view, actual positive news coming from the Church of England for a very long time is always nice news and they should be praised for it. They really, really should be. It shows, if nothing else, that when we have a Government that is unwilling to act on important issues there are others willing to step up and do the right thing. I wish them every success.
