    A good posture and lifting technique go a very long way towards making you impervious to most back injuries.

    PS > Also remember that if it hurts there is a reason for it, so stop moving and let your body heal itself. Painkillers only cover the problem and allow you to hurt yourself further because you aren't feeling the warning signs. <_<;

    PPS > For lifting techniques there's nothing better than going to the heavy lifting section of a Gym. Once you actually learn to lift with your legs while having your back straight you'll be able to lift heavier things with ease and without risking an injury.

      From reading his posts you really wouldn't guess it.

      On the topic of hurting backs and exercise: Walking roughly a mile each way between work and home hasn't really done enough for me. I can't imagine how much worse off I'd be if I was driving instead.

      I think some of the stretches are starting to help, as is changing my sleeping position, but going into the office and having to sit in a chair all day is probably the worst thing I could possibly be doing for my back right now. I'm giving some serious thought to just taking a few days off so I don't have to keep aggravating my back while trying to help it get better. Maybe I could get a doctor's note...

        1 sec... I have an idea for you. Just let me find the link.

        ---------- Post added at 12:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:06 PM ----------

        One of my co-workers uses one of these. It's not the same brand, but she swears by it. I've actually used it a few times when she's left it overnight. It's really pretty comfortable and seems to straighten your back out really well. It might be something cheap and effective to help you at work.

          For two dollars I can't say "no". I'll definitely be ordering one of these tonight.

          Cheap and effective was the strategy I used to beat carpal tunnel, maybe lightning will strike twice.

            An even cheaper option would be actually using your muscles and straighten up by yourself.

            The best exercise you can do for that is also one of the simplest. Often forgotten in favor of abs and others, but these muscles play the most important role in both keeping a good posture and preventing lower back injuries.

            Just need to do them slowly and without forcing yourself. But you'll notice the effect right away even with 10 repetitions a day, that's how atrophied those muscles tend to be. At least on people here. <_<;

            Also, from what I've seen walking and other general exercises don't count, you have to train your abs and back muscles directly or it just wont help your back at all.

              Yup. I'm definitely doing the packet of exercises my doctor handed me. I don't know that I can notice any immediate effects, although there's a good chance that's because I'm drowning out all of that with painkillers for another week or so(again, as per instructions from my doctor).

              I've gotten into a morning routine already. Wake up, turn on computer, go do back stretches/exercises while the computer boots. Sadly I don't usually have enough time to do the entire list of exercises in the morning, but I manage to do most of the ones that involve me laying on my back. Then when I come home at night I go through the full list before dinner and then do a few more throughout the evening depending on how my back is feeling.

                I personally love compound lifts. Deads and squats all day.

                    Perform missionary position at least once a day. Got it. It's a sacrifice, but one I'll gladly make for better health.

                              It's not that simple! You need to do it without using your arms for support.
