Successful troll is the goddamn president of the United States.
But still to this day, that trust you mentioned is important-- if a government gives out money, people have to believe that that is money that they will be able to use to purchase goods and services. When governments print money so they can spend it, it increases the rate of inflation-- simply put, there's more money out there, so it isn't worth as much. This is the cause of hyperinflation in many cases. Even a government cannot spend money it doesn't have. In order to pay laborers and acquire materials, a government must expend money, and simply printing more bills causes more problems. The 'belief' in money is something which only lasts as long as the currency is in fact useful and stable enough to remain useful.
You think I don't know this? You're a bigger idiot for making that assumption.
The point I'm trying to make is that every single one of you do not know or do not appreciate what is and what isn't a fiscal crisis. Every single Republican president going back to WWII has ridden the country up the debt ladder and every single Democratic president has managed to take it down a notch including President Obama.
No one has rung the toll bell or death knell for Japan. Korea was in the same situation during the 90s back when they had inflation (bordering on hyperinflation). But the country was never in any danger of a collapse. Those people will go on living and the government will continue to serve their duties and obligations just as they have had for many years. The only way America will be in big trouble will be because of one of two things:
1. The people in this country stop believing the government is legitimate and seek to overthrow it (i.e., Communist Revolution in China)
2. Everyone around the world stop believing in the dollar and renders it absolutely worthless.

You do realize that even 'just inflation' would still do huge damage to the American people, right?
More importantly, yeah, we kinda need to stop that from happening. If we get to the point where China doesn't think they'll get their money back, we're screwed.

Moreover, you seem to be drawing a false dichotomy between the country collapsing (whatever that means) and everything being fine. Most likely the country will not "collapse" in that the world between Canada and Mexico will not come to an end, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned. There are plenty of possibilities between those two extremes.
