Canada is a member of the Commonwealth, but not the British Empire and hasn't been since 1867. As a Canadian, your options to claim to British Citizenship are the same as any other person not born in the Empire, that is through parents or grandparents if they were born in the UK or the few remaining holdings of the Empire.
If you were born after January 1, 1983, you can clam British citizenship through your mother if she was born in the UK, prior to that you can only petition on the grounds of your father if he is from the UK, or if it is only your mother who is British, through your maternal grandparents if they are British Citizens.
