Fandom takes a running joke from an animator and turns it into a "Fanon" character. Hasbro finally adds Derpy: the fandom bitches and rages.
Fandom produces tons of Wonderbolt Dash fanfiction and art because Dash being a Wonderbolt would be fucking awesome. Hasbro finally has Dash get into the Wonderbolts: the fandom bitches and rages.
Fandom produces tons of Princess Twilight fanfiction and art because they worked out that Celestia is training her for that. Hasbro finally makes Twilight a princess: the fandom bitches and rages.
Fandom produces tons of Humanised Pony and "Slice of Life" fanfiction and art. Hasbro finally makes a "Slice of Life" spin-off with Humanised Ponies: the fandom bitches and rages.
Glad I don't pay attention to what the fandom is doing.
idk, it just seem like taking these characters out of their niche and putting them into something more mass market is a disappointing direction to take. I couldn't care less for yet another damn high school drama, even if it is pony flavored. A one hour special for a lark I guess I could see, but a full length movie is surprising, and sending it to theaters is shocking. I guess they're counting on bronies to drive sales? But if they recognize that we represent an important market, why don't they make us more acceptable merch? I realize some exists now, but still not a lot. I don't really see enough parents taking their kids to this to justify a theatrical release.
I don't remember any fallout from the Wonderbolt Academy episode. Some people complained that they liked Spitfire's voice better in Best Night Ever, but that's splitting hairs.
The problem with Equestria Girls is that it looks like a cheap cash grab. Hasbro openly admitted they're trying to cash in on the tween market; they most likely want to compete with Monster High and to a lesser extent Barbie. Instead of making some new IP for it, they decided to shoehorn MLP into the role. None of the material they've shown inspires confidence: it looks like they're falling back on the tired tropes of a love interest and a bitchy rival; everyone's wearing cut-and-paste outfits even though Applejack and Rainbow Dash wouldn't be caught dead in skirts; Spike gets the short end of the stick again. That's pretty disappointing considering Faust set out to create something different from the usual commercialized girl crap.
I'm not gonna knock it until I've watched it. I thought Hasbro jumped the shark when they started teasing A Canterlot Wedding and that turned out to be awesome. I also don't want to shit on the writers or animators because it's probably not their call to make and they're probably still putting their all into it. But putting that aside, it really does look like something the marketing department of a toy company thought up. You can't really blame people for expecting the worst.

How did this poll get 1541 voters when there are maybe (maybe) two dozen active members of this forum? Yes, it's been up quite a while but what the hell lol.
