So, I'm not even a Trixie fan, but I think I can safely say that Episode 5 is the best episode of the new season yet. If you haven't yet already, what they hay are you waiting for?
Also, relevant (spoiler-free) art:

Holy crap. I think I'm safe to say this is must be my favorite episode of all of FiM. A major point in RD's life, an antagonist who I can't even call an antagonist, some awesome pacing (I was surprised I was nearing the end of the episode; I had to check twice), and some old favorites. (YEEEAH!)
Even the "lesson of the day" didn't feel like it was shoved in our face. It was all natural.
Favorite episode, indeed.
and the PinkieDash shippers of the world rejoiced.
Yeah she got some major character development in the last two episodes, this one especially:
Spitfire's deliberately making Rainbow Dash second banana. It allowed her prove she's capable of selflessness and work in a team, and also highlighted what an unsuitable leader Lightning Dust was. Spitfire's already seen that Rainbow Dash can lead (Hurricane Fluttershy), but she needed proof that Rainbow Dash was also capable of putting her own glory aside for sake of her team.
Rainbow Dash is shown to be a lot more caring, cautious and responsible than in earlier episodes. Even after an initial tantrum, she seems to swallow her pride to accept the wingpony position and perform to the best of her abilities in a team where she's not the leader, and she doesn't hesitate much to ditch the Wonderbolts if their work comes at the cost of other ponies. Since Lightning Dust behaves much like Dash did at the beginning of the show, the difference shows pretty well.
Dash handing in her badge when she couldn't take Lighting Dust nearly getting everyone killed again...I think it was the first time I ever teared up at a fucking episode of My Little Pony
Dash actually staying is interesting too since it does hint at the end that this could be a two parter (episode 8's title hasn't been announced IIRC)
That said, Pinkie Pie. Holy fuck they made her annoying in this episode. Then again it WAS a Merriweather Williams episode and she does have a track record of turning characters into flat and one dimensional shadows of themselves (The Mysterious Mare Do Well).
Also Spitfire's Drill Sergeant voice...I love it.
But this screencap sums up how I responded to the ending:
and the PinkieDash shippers of the world rejoiced.
Actually, even before Lightning Dust introduced herself, I couldn't help but sing "Rainbow has a girlfriend" when they met.
And then they took all of Dash's innate ego and jerkishness and relocated it to her other half. (Though it was rather sudden, I suppose it could be explained away by being made lead pony going to Lightning Dust's head; undoubtedly RD would've behaved exactly the same in her position, were she not one of the Mane 6 with mandatory character development episodes . . . and almost exactly the same even accounting for that!)

I also love that Luna being an amalgamation of Nyx and Morpheus is now canon.
Same. It also makes Nightmare Moon seem scarier as well, since she could probably turn all your dreams into nightmares. Combined with eternal nighttime, it's extremely sadistic.
It'd also make her the equivalent of Nightmare from Kirby's Dream Land Adventure.

Maybe pre-Season 2, but I think she learned her lesson in Find a Pet when she almost got herself killed (and could've potentially killed the pets as well.) If the roles had been reversed, I don't think RD would've forced Lightning Dust to pass through the log that clipped her wing if Lightning Dust wasn't sure she could make it.
I found Pinkie to be in-character. It's been shown that not having friends is her biggest fear, so it makes sense she'd blow Rainbow Dash going away out of proportion.
