A lot of animation from the 80's was like that. I think it was the lack of definite lines. The colour was a lot less vibrant as well.

Well compare the happy meal Applejack with the official toy line Applejack, for example. Other than getting the cutie mark wrong, the kids meal version resembles the animation a lot more than the official product.

Their hair is so distinctive that I think the molded hair versions work better. But I think one of the appealing factors for girls is that you can brush the hair, so I dunno.
