Is it bad that I worried about other people I knew in Japan and totally forgot about Feba being there?

I've yet to make contact with those I know, but I'm sure its just the electricity being out. I'm more worried about their kids, it probably really freaked them out. My friend Justin last posted pictures of them on flicker a few days ago.

I always hate stuff like this because I can never be sure if checking up makes things better or more stressful for those involved.

I did add a 'fucking' for emphasis; to point out just how huge the word they used for "huge" is. The other paper, an Asahi Shimbun, has the headline of "Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Calamity"; This "Great Earthquake Calamity" word being the same as the one used to describe the 1923 Kantou and 1995 Hanshin quakes. Or for those that don't know their Japanese earthquake history, big. Other than that, yes, they're pretty much exactly what the headlines say.

And no, BBQ, that's not at all bad. It's not exactly like my exposure in your life has changed hugely, and I try not to beat people over the head with the "I'M IN JAPAN!" thing; perfectly makes sense that other people would come to mind first. On contacting, I would say go with it-- although maybe try their parents or loved ones first, if you know them too; my mom's been fielding calls from concerned relatives all day, and I'm glad I don't have to deal with emails from all of them. I've only had to deal with my school and you guys, really, everyone else has gone through her. Yes, electricity and other resources are still out, and given some of the problems with nuclear reactors getting damaged and having a hard time finding supplies, and that there are sure to be more quakes, I would expect the ultimate numbers of people without utilities to go down on average, while individual areas go out intermittently. Generally speaking though, I would say it's comforting to know people care, although I do know plenty of people were up past midnight texting "yes yes I'm ok". I'm not contacting acquaintances, but anyone whose loss would give me more than a bad day I'm checking with.

They said on CNN earlier that this is actually only the 5th largest recorded quake in Japan's history.

No, it's world history. This is the most powerful quake in recorded Japanese history. We're lucky it was 80 miles off the ocean in Sendai, which not only gives us space (and thus, less powerful shaking), but also warning (there are early warning systems that picked up the beginning of the quake, and forwarded on the information ahead of the physical shockwave). If there had been an M9~ (I'm looking at a newspaper saying 8.8, common seems to be 8.9 or 9, I've seen 9.1 or 9.2 in some places, it'll probably be debated and unclear for awhile) quake under Tokyo, things would probably be looking much uglier. On the other hand, almost all of the damage we've seen so far is from tsunami, not quakes.

I was looking over some of the details about the nuclear power plants in Japan. Seems like things are under control for now, but even with all the precautions, the solid bedrock foundations that they were built on under regulation still took a big hit and damaged systems.

Some of the systems sound pretty old and too different from one another, each problem needing a specialized solution which could be detrimental to stabilizing each of them. I'm hoping they manage to avert any major issues, but I also hope other nations will be willing to step in and advise Japan on building a better and more standardized system.

Not quite-- 3000 times more energy involved. That doesn't necessarily mean 3000 times more damage, death, or so on.

That said, I'm really dreading the final tally of what the estimated financial damage is from this. It's not just the destroyed ports, cargo, homes, jobs, lives, and so on; there is widespread closing of business. There's also the general "let's stay home because it's safer if there's an aftershock" climate (my school has specifically instructed students to do this, although with the logic being that it's easier to check up on everyone). I don't know if anyone actually reads them, but at some point I got a travel advisory from the US State Department recommending people abstain from travel to Japan until April; that seems a bit extreme. Sure, the airports and all other transportation were out yesterday evening and night, but they're already recovering (I haven't bothered to check the airports; the trains are running mostly between 30 and 80% capacity). The aftershocks aren't likely to be nearly as bad, even if they are localized. Point being, lots of money being bled out in lots of ways.


On the other hand, the electronics store I went to earlier was sold out of most models of radio thanks to the earthquake; and the supermarkets seemed especially busy, although that may just be people who intended to shop yesterday coming in to get stuff done.

It seems the issues with the nuclear power plant in Fukushima got worse. I just got an e-mail from the state department a few hours ago telling everyone in a 20km area to evacuate immediately. Ugh. :S

The nuclear plant thing smells of Deepwater Horizon to me. Here we're running this facility which we know has the capacity to produce a huge ecoogical, economic and humanitarian disaster, and there are backup systems in place to ostensibly prevent that, but OOPS guess the backups don't work after all. I'm not saying there's a conspiracy, but I might go so far as to say an epidemic of catastrophic irresponsibility.

How about instead of guessing or declaring the end of the world, we look at actual information.
