I didn't necessarily imply that they'll be absorbed into South Korea overnight, just that you'll be speaking the right language when North Korea finally collapses.

And I mean, yes, but that was 20 years ago. They've kinda gotten better since then.

Ugh, I made the mistake of turning on the news recently and it's all "Oh noes, radio-active tap water in Tokyo! Bottled water all sold out!"

Doesn't bottled water normally fly off the shelf after a catastrophe hits? Feba is the news over here just crazy and wants to stir everything into a panic or is everyone over there actually scared of their tap water?

well, bottled water sold out right after the quake anyway (not due to radiation fears, but simple concern over loss of infrastructure), so it's not exactly surprising that there would be a shortage after even a small rush on it. The water, as you're probably aware but I'm going to say anyway for those getting their news here, was rated around 190-210 of some silly French Unit. The Japanese government says that the limit for sustained human consumption is 300; but in infants, 100. So they recommended that parents not give their kids tap water, and that manufacturers not use it for kid's products, and started handing out bottled water to parents, although it's fine for a short period of time. Last I checked, the level had fallen to 76 or 79 anyway.

In general, I'd assume that people aren't freaking out yet. To be perfectly honest, I haven't been to a supermarket or convenience store in days (did go to a drugstore, didn't go to the drinks section), so I don't really know what the stock is like. Still, like I've said before, it's much easier to run out of stock in Tokyo than many Americans are used to, simply because there's less shelf and storage space.

Also a generalisation, but I would say that the media is generally overstating things. The really annoying thing, though, is that to me all of the foreign news basically comes a day late-- and in this, that's forever. By the time Americans are all "OMIGAWDS REACTOR DID WUT?", the issue is largely blown over here. By the time you'd read about the tap water readings, they'd already gone back down, and advice against giving it to children has been rescinded.

In all seriousness, I thought of modifying my avatar to add some pony-ness to it, but the effort required for such a thing coupled with the implication that my sons are girly-men pretty much changed my mind. And I like having my kids as my avatar, so not changing it.
