Re: Japan devastated by earthquakes, tsunami, Feba
Devil's Night in Detroit....that is so damn stupid! No respect!

I taught my kids respect. Hell they won't even take a shortcut over someones lawn because I've taught them to respect other peoples property. Parenting has really taken a nose dive for a lot of people if they can't even take the time to teach their kids the basics.

Fiction. People are leaving areas damaged by the earthquake, where infrastructure and supplies are a problem. Those leaving Tokyo are mostly expats, who are listening to people back home panicking. Have a few paranoids left Tokyo for the south? sure. Is it nearly enough to even make a dent on the population here? no.
There are credible reporters there and seeing the long traffic jam of cars leaving DUE TO NUCLEAR RADIATION FEARS. Many were interviewed and asked and that's the reason given. You can choose to believe who you want to believe (of course, I don't trust local media since government influence is at it's greatest)
Not saying foreign media (i.e., outside of Japan) is any better but we're talking human beings here and to say that it's not even happening is kinda ... disingenuous ... especially since you're not there (safely in Tokyo, not anywhere near Fukushima)
It was the same at 3 Mile and at Chernobyl. Mention the word "radiation" and people will jump at the chance to leave.
Did you even read my post? I said "people are leaving areas damaged...", and then went on to talking about Tokyo. I also clearly mentioned that some people are leaving Tokyo-- but far from a huge amount. These are the same people who would be duct taping their windows shut back home.
Here's another hint: it's fucking Tokyo. Like I said about the lines for gas, it doesn't take a lot to it doesn't take much at all to start a traffic jam. I got caught in traffic jams going into Tokyo simply because it happened to be a Sunday night.
Re: Japan devastated by earthquakes, tsunami, Feba
I would understand people wanting to go on a little vacation if the radiation is supposedly being blown down to Tokyo. I would definitely consider it if I was living there, even though I know it wouldn't really harm me much if at all.
A very few people do start to stock up; these are the sky-is-falling types. People notice this, and think that they too should get some. Before you know it, word gets around that stores are running low on Item-X which people need, and people go out to buy it before they're unable to obtain it anymore. It's just a domino effect.
The gas station lines are an entirely different problem. One, Japan simply doesn't have as many gas stations as there we do in the states, and those that are there have far fewer numbers of pumps. Combine this with the crowdedness (lack of lanes, pouring into and out of areas randomly, making two lane streets major roads) of Japanese streets and it's not at all surprising that the lines are getting long.
Really, just look at people sometime. There's really no panic to it, it's just what they feel like they need to do.
What base are you on though?
I suppose you have a point. That being said, it is hard to tell. Main thing that makes me disgusted are the people that worry about radiation hitting the US and how I can't watch a news channel without hearing about those "possibilities" and such.
And to answer your question: Yokota AB.
Also, I went to Akihabara on Saturday. Business was as normal other than a couple shops closed (including Gundam Cafe....still haven't eaten there!!!! stupid lines and my sheer impatience to wait in one!).

Did you see the thing where Ann Coulter was debating with Bill O'Reilly on how radiation was actually good for you.
Brain bleed, man. BLEED.
But yeah, things are mostly back to normal, other than elevators and lights being out for energy conservation.
If it makes you feel any better I don't fly or maintain the planes.
Only makes me feel better if you're a pilot or mech--- nah, that would be in poor taste. Just pilot then.
So basically, things which have happened:
International Office started getting really damn unprofessional, probably to the point of breaking laws (informing my mother of things ahead of me, when she's not officially connected to the program in any way, and has no right to any information), I CC'd the student newspaper partially because this was pissing me off, partially because, I mean, I am feba.
They cancelled [sic!] their spring program in Japan and told me to come home, and I wrote back like "That is absolutely silly and makes no sense, also you're a community college and nobody cares what the fuck you have to say.", and they're like "Oh, well in that case, ok. Let us know if you need anything.", and we're all like
Re: Japan devastated by earthquakes, tsunami, Feba
Manifest of students came in for my school's international program. Of next semester, at least 32 people have canceled. On the other hand, over 70 people still plan to participate. Both of these numbers are fuzzy-- there are at least five people marked as continuing whose universities have recalled all of their students (and without the luxury of telling their schools to shove it which I exercised). And most of the students from America who are staying on are all "lols I haven't marked which one I'm doing yet". So it could be over 80 students, or under 60, and I wouldn't be terribly surprised either way. Definitely hoping for the smaller size though, reduced class sizes would be nice; not that they're too large, I just prefer smaller classes.
Sad to see a lot of people go though, including most of the Korean students. If nothing else, most of them were damn cute. I'm not at all surprised that the students who come here from my school back home have a history of going to Korea afterwards. And no, I'm not just kidding, they had Korean girlfriends/fiances/wives. I mean, speaking in terms of culture, language, impact on the world, attractiveness of women, Korea is the place to be right now. You think you're a weeaboo? HAHA, anime is produced in Korea now fagot. You like video games? Guess who's starting to churn out not only actually decent one, but who owns the MMO industry? Technology? Don't make me laugh. Inevitable collapse of the government right next door, which happens to have a population large enough to provide huge growth opportunities, while also not having any competition in the market until the day they go down-- and all of this is speaking roughly the same language? If you want to learn a language for your future, take Korean.
"But Feba!", you say, taking another gulp of your Canada Dry and slowly adjusting your seat back,, "if Korea is so wonderful, why are you studying Japanese?".
The answer is simple, my friend. Written Korean is one of the coolest things you'll ever see. Spoken Korean sounds like the smacking lips of a fat Chinese man.

Yes, every country just dreams of having unemployment skyrocket to 50% over night, especially when it is a largely uneducated and untrained workforce that has been starved to the shady side of death. Other than a war, NK would be the largest drain on government funds South Korea could embark on.
Also most anime is created and produced in Japan, it is only drawn in Korea because they're cheap labor. They also coloured pizza wrong in the early episodes of the Simpsons because they have no clue.
No country that thinks pizza is blue and green is going to take over the world.
