Re: Japan devastated by earthquakes, tsunami, Feba
No, I wouldn't. I'd call it economics.
A very few people do start to stock up; these are the sky-is-falling types. People notice this, and think that they too should get some. Before you know it, word gets around that stores are running low on Item-X which people need, and people go out to buy it before they're unable to obtain it anymore. It's just a domino effect.
The gas station lines are an entirely different problem. One, Japan simply doesn't have as many gas stations as there we do in the states, and those that are there have far fewer numbers of pumps. Combine this with the crowdedness (lack of lanes, pouring into and out of areas randomly, making two lane streets major roads) of Japanese streets and it's not at all surprising that the lines are getting long.
Really, just look at people sometime. There's really no panic to it, it's just what they feel like they need to do.
If you look at all of the JP boards the hysteria is there. The amount of whackos posting seems to have shot up by a lot with claims about Chinese spies infiltrated the plants and causing issues to Obama made a pact with Hu (Jintao) to divide up Japan between them to Al Qaeda is mind controlling Kan to "an elaborate hoax staged by aliens".
And then of course the mass exodus from areas outside of the 20km zone imposed by the government, numerous Japanese reporters babbling to the public about how you couldn't trust the government and Charlie Sheen spotted sifting through the ruins for his missing shipment of Korean imported meth.
apparently my school's insurance company is not giving a single fuck at the moment, which means my school is fine with it as long as I am. So that's good. Still no idea about the local school-- rolling blackout scheduled from 8 minutes off until the afternoon. Consumption seems to have gone up, so they're getting longer.
Ugh. We had one day of rolling blackouts (about 5-10 minutes out of every 60-90) in Texas last month for various reasons. Demand from a longer than usual freeze (over 48 hours of continuous freeze in Austin is very rare), and a couple of power plants weren't working. The fun part was the traffic lights that were on those circuits with no battery backup or anything.
The power supply to my DVL-909 LD/DVD player bit the dust because of it. I do have another one in storage, but still, that sucks. Haven't had the time to see if or even where I can get it repaired, but at least MPC on my living room PC will play DVDs. I got a second DVD drive for it the other day and still need to install it.
So you should probably unplug stuff you're not using if only to keep the power supplies from getting zapped if the power has dirty spikes while it goes on or off.

That's a good one. He's too busy with his March Madness brackets and dancing in Rio to care about helping Japan, much less taking it over. Not to mention that wonderful bowing demonstration when he was over there a while back.

And if you look at American forums, we all are about to overthrow the government, set up a Capitalist Anarchy, and rape small children. The people that come out of the woodwork on the internets don't exactly represent, you know, humans.
And then of course the mass exodus from areas outside of the 20km zone imposed by the government,
Fiction. People are leaving areas damaged by the earthquake, where infrastructure and supplies are a problem. Those leaving Tokyo are mostly expats, who are listening to people back home panicking. Have a few paranoids left Tokyo for the south? sure. Is it nearly enough to even make a dent on the population here? no.
In personal news, I am probably a few days away from giving my school back home the finger.
Re: Japan devastated by earthquakes, tsunami, Feba
The people that are panicking are the ones to the north that were hit the hardest. I don't blame them. I've seen the interviews where elderly are dying from the stress, they are wrapped in layers of clothing because there is no heat in the shelters, where women are sobbing because they have had to let their babies go without milk because there is none, food is scarce and children are crying because they are hungry, etc. Yes people in those areas are panicking and they should be. The idiots in the US that are panicking about radiation....I'd like to kick them in the damn teeth. My sister asked me to get her some potassium iodide, or as she said "the anti-radiation pills", and my first impulse was to slap her across the face. When I said no and explained why she doesn't have to worry, she said "But we live by Lake Michigan, and the radiation can travel in the water right to us!" Fyi, chanting "I love my family" does NOT work.

Re: Japan devastated by earthquakes, tsunami, Feba
Well, yes. Things are bad up north, and I'm sure many of them are justifiably panicked. But the idea of a mass nuclear panic in Tokyo is simply a huge distortion.
Re: Japan devastated by earthquakes, tsunami, Feba
Maybe once the wind changes so will things in Tokyo. I know its not as bad as people are saying. The Japanese just up and abandon their country....come on people you know how stoic these people are!

The no looting thing didn't occur to me until watching the video. You know if even one of those disasters happened here in the states it'd be PANDELIRIUM.
