We didn't get hit bad here in Hawaii with 2m tsunamis but I heard some homes got washed into the lagoon on Kona. Will update if I get more info.

yeah but no, this is a huge disaster. It's 5:35 in the fucking morning and I haven't checked the news to see the latest death tolls and destruction (and I felt at least two, much softer shakes since yesterday; once when I was going to sleep, and once sometime in the middle of the last night. Oh, and just as I'm typing this there's another one, no joke.). I don't know what kind of images you guys have access to, but there was some incredible stuff on TV-- giant oil facilities of some kind just going up in huge pillars of flame; places where you couldn't tell what was formerly city and what was formerly port (there was a nice fail boat sitting on its side next to a convenience store), and one of their favorites, some kind of black water, full of debris, sweeping across a farm scene. Absolutely apocalyptic, the last one.


To give a sense of just how fucking huge the quake was, (the tsunamis afterward probably caused more destruction, I'm not sure), it happened around 280 miles away from Tokyo-- and I live well on the west side of Tokyo. It was rather intense, and lasted quite a long time; probably over a minute the first time. A parking garage in my city had its ramp collapse, and this is minor damage compared to places farther to the north and east.

As Mhurron mentioned, my IM status was set to "I'm OK"; this is because the only thing I lost at my house was phone line, and by connection internet. I figured it would reconnect at some point in the middle of the night. We got lucky-- I've heard that other buildings locally lost gas (it's still pretty cold here), and the news had something about upwards of four million people being out of power. My phone was out of service the better part of yesterday evening.

Seriously though that sucks for Japan, I saw it late last night before I went to bed on CNN. Just a while ago they were talking about a possible leak from a Nuclear powerplant into the water, which is just going to create a whole other disaster. All the highspeed rail is shut down too so people are stranded. One of the iReports on CNN showed a guy in his room with a bag of water. No, I'm not kidding, a bag of freaking water because he has no gas or hydro services, just electricity.

Glad you are okay. I'm making the rounds and asking about the well being of friends in Japan. My in-laws are trying to reach their relatives in Sendai.

They know how to write headlines. Picked up some newspapers today; the main page is just "EASTERN JAPAN GIANT FUCKING EARTHQUAKE" for both of the major papers, but the insides of one of them was just scary. "THE CITY DISAPPEARED" "SWALLOWED EARTH" "I CAN'T CONTACT MY CHILDREN" "WHEN CAN WE GO HOME?"; and that's before you get to the actual fucking reports. Fires, collapses, tsunamis, and then all of the fucked up infrastructure. I don't have the heart to open the other one yet.
