Re: So I wonder what the cigarette companies think of this...

It is indeed. I visited a nearby humidor some time back with a friend, and after a few minutes I was completely confused by the distinctions between the various cigars. Cigarettes have dozens of different varieties and flavors as well.

Light and Ultra Light are, what, gold and silver now, I think? And all cigarettes that were previously marked with one of those markers had a big message on the side of the box that said it had nothing to do with less cancer causing agents, but rather flavor.

I used to smoke Camel Number 9s, because they were similar in flavor (ie: not much flavor) to Marlboro Ultra-Lights, but cheaper, but I always got shit from the person at the counter, because they came in a black and pink box. I didn't design the packaging, shop-clerk! It's not like I was smoking 100s or slim cigarettes.

Re: So I wonder what the cigarette companies think of this...

I hate it when people light up next to me, its high up on anti social things to do these days and they can get to the extreem. My mates fiancee's (now wife) father didn;t attend their wedding in new york as he could not smoke on the plane for the 8 hour flight. he smokes 3 packs a day.

When i was a firefighter I can tell you in my 5 years as a retained firefighter (like your volunteer) we attended 126 house fires caused by smokers falling asleep smoking or not stubbing out fags propperly. We also removed out of those 23 dead bodies. and the worst case was the mother who had left a ciggerette in an ashtray on the sofa and went to teh loo, the resultant hosefire cost the lives of 2 children, she survived.

as has been said we've had for many years graphic pictures on fag packets and for over 12 years had "smoking kills" on teh side of the packets. 3 years ago a smoking ban in public buildings was enforced in the uk and it actually reduced fires in these premises as well as making the environments in pubs more tollerable.

Anyway enough of that.. I do agree their are alot of people who are like the Tabacco police who go to far and after the serious side and my own observations and experiences from a different point of view as an ex firefighter, heres a light hearted view from billy Connolly about the "tabacco police"

Isn't that a bit hypocritical, even if it is just comedy? Smoking in smoking approved rooms is okay, but talking on cell phones in approved areas isn't? Yeahhhhhh...

I wasn't aware there were restrictions on where people were allowed to use cell phones.

There aren't really, but it is generally considered rude to be yakking loudly on a phone in an enclosed area such as a bus, elevator, or conference room. I can't understand why anyone would want to talk that loudly in the first place. It's your conversation, do you really want it to be everyone else's business?

Rude people are just everywhere, though. I carpooled with a friend of mine who argued with his ex-wife for the duration of the drive. And all I could do was sit there silently hoping either one of them would get tired of it and hang up to end the awkwardness. I mean, come on. It's definitely not my business. Argue after you drop me off, kthx.

I dislike phones. A lot. I only use my cell to txt people.

There are signs in some areas that ask you to not talk on your cell phone. Only saw them when I lived in Japan, though. :p

                      This is not anti-social

No, that's just a very angry man that doesn't give a fuck about you not liking him smoking.

                      This is anti-social

He kills people for fun. He will blow smoke in your face, smoke where he's not supposed to, like inside federal buildings and theaters. Which would you really worry about, though. The smoking or that whole "murdering people" thing?

                      Again:

This is Jason Todd, a maladjusted youth Bruce Wayne took under his wing to become Robin. He is not anti-social (at least at this point).

This is The Joker beating the shit out of Jason Todd with a crowbar and enjoying it, just before he rigs the warehouse with explosives and blows Jason up. This is anti-social.

Being anti-social is not just shirking social norms, but the utter defiance of them to an extreme that is morally and legally reprehensible. Its not the hermit in your neighborhood, but the guy that just can't conform to laws and morals and ends up in jail or a padded-room. They're not the kids that go to detention, but the kids that wind up in juvenile hall and never leave.

I hope I have cleared this up. I have to run this example by my parents every now and again to correct them. I'm not a very social person, I'm just not wired with great emotional needs other people might have. Put me in a room and I can talk up a storm with anyone, its just not something I have an aching need to do and can go for weeks without. My family calls this "anti-social," I just call it keeping to myself.

I think you overestimate how easy it is to avoid smokers. Regardless of location, they act like it's a god-given right to smoke and they stand pretty much where people typically walk. They don't care that others might be nearby, because they all have the exact same "go somewhere else" attitude about it. But the door swings both ways, because they can go somewhere else if they don't want an earful about it.

That's right, when there are only a couple doors into a store and there are smokers standing at every one of them, i am supposed to go out of my way to avoid them? like walk in the delivery door in the back? There are times when i can get hit by smoke from them hundred feet away. i didn't see the invisible cloud of smoke heading towards me. But that's my problem, i am sure some of you will be quick to point out. The probelm is, smoking is not just a 'personal' habit. the smoke and its issues do not just hover within a 1 foot radius around the smoker. You guys want to kill yourselves, by all means hook a nicotine IV up to yourself, but when it affects me, then we got a problem. You have the right to smoke, but you don't have the right to take me with you. My wife is an ex-smoker so i know alot about it, and she is more vocal towards people about it than me. I am sure this will get picked apart by most everyone on here. that is usually why i don't post. but i don't really care. I know the difference between right and wrong so do everyone one of you. that is what makes it worse is adults acting like children.

This! I hate this! This and really slow walking groups of people who talk and ignore you when you give the usual "excuse me" to get past so you either have to play chicken in the road to pass them and end up in hospital, or barge through and shove one of them into the road or through a plate glass window and end up in jail.

Is it bad that I feel an uncontrollable urge to punch these people in the back of the head whenever I meet them?

No, that's a natural response to people who walk too goddamn slow in a row. I've been repressing that urge for years.
