Re: So I wonder what the cigarette companies think of this...

I just don't find myself in the movie situations where people blow smoke in my face.

I see someone smoking outside a storefront, I avoid them.
If its someone I'm talking to, I don't stand downwind.

How hard is this? Its practically a subconscious action for me.

Seriously. I have to question the experiences of people who claim to be persecuted by second hand smoke. I'm not saying that second hand smoke isn't an issue, and that it doesn't exist, but these days it is fairly easily avoided.

Because clearly you're being persecuted. And so you are entirely justified in your over the top response.
How much of a child do you have to be to not know smoke isn't always visible? This is Bill Nye-level science, here. Stand up-wind, you're still inhaling smoke. Stand on a balcony above them, you're still inhaling smoke. You could be a block away and still be inhaling smoke. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean you're not inhaling it.

You probably set off cancerous tumors in a few people and never even realized it.

Oh, god, seriously? Do you ever walk near an automobile? An air conditioner? Any kind of building or factory? A sewer? A trash can?

Maybe the cancerous tumors you've gotten from all those mean smokers is affecting your ability to make a viable point here.

Your weak-ass attempt to shame me for (once) being a smoker isn't going to work. Again, you just look like a self-righteous asshole.

Re: So I wonder what the cigarette companies think of this...

I'm very worried about government agencies feeling like they have to babysit their citizens.

What happened to personal responsability and proper parenting?

I mean I'm all for banning people from smoking at public places, period. But they have the right to enjoy smoking in private if they want to without being forced to see distasteful images every f'ing tiime they buy a pack of cigs or having the government nagging them like a freaking nanny.

It's healthcare costs they are worried about? Then charge them premium prices, just the same as it should for overweight people.

It has been proven time and again that banning drinks, cigs, junk food, etc. does absolutely nothing. Why keep repeating the same mistake, and why does people aprove this kind of political manuevering thing in the first place?

            Wait... what was I ranting about again? Ah screw it I'll just be happy I don't smoke and go watch some anime (while at work) <_<;

You're falling apart, buddy. I guess if I did have a brain tumow affecting me, wouldn't that prove my point? How exactly do air conditioners, sewers, and trash cans cause cancer?

Yes, it's my argument that's falling apart. Because you haven't made any completely over the top and ridiculous claims. We're surrounded by shit that causes cancer, genius. Cigarette smoke is a factor, certainly, but you are seriously overemphasizing your level of exposure.

That's no reason to underemphasize second hand smoke's effects.

If anything you should be campaigning so all the other factors were given as much attention as people does to cigarete smoke.

For instance, one I personally campaign against is fiberglass dust in air conditioning installations. It can be very harmful when not properly handled and be just as much of a danger as cigarette smoke, if not worse.

So no, the "there are other factors, so this isn't as bad" argument doesn't fly for me.

At no point have I said that we should under-emphasize it. And my argument wasn't "Because there are other cancer causing agents out there, this isn't so bad," but rather "you seem awfully focused on this one factor to the exclusion of everything else - where is your tirade about the other factors?" I mean, he's basically saying that no matter when and where someone smokes, SOMEONE is getting cancer.

Hide yo kids, hide yo wife, we giving errbody cancer up in here.

Education is important. Taxing it is important. People being responsible parents is important. Passive aggressive behavior? Not so useful or important.

Dak, you're reaching a bit far out there bud. Second hand smoke is bad yes, but it doesnt extend as far as you're trying to pretend. Bill Nye? GTFO of here with that shit, it's kiddy science at best and doesn't stand up to actual scientific principle. As an on and off smoker with a child, I make sure to be the responsible parent and change clothes after smoking, as well as taking a nice shower before I even come close to my child. Gruesome pictures on a cigarette box aint gonna do diddly squat to curb serious smokers, however it may have a slight impact on those who are on the fence about quitting.

All in all, your arguments sound like a witch hunt (get this, witches never existed) so why not get over yourself and let people do as they wish?

Meh. I don't think this is going to do shit. They practically doubled the price of a pack of cigarettes here and people still buy them. (And then proceed to bitch about the fact that they don't have any money ... when they're spending $50 a week on fucking cigs ...) The DJ on the radio this morning said that some of the hardcore smokers will be like, "Hell yeah, check it out, I'm going to be all gross!" You know, bragging about it and shit. Like it's a badge of honor.

So yeah, it's not going to change much.

Even before the taxes happened, I once counted up how much a friend smoked per day per pack and he was spending at least $2.5k per year. And that's before factoring in what he spent on beer.

For me, that's about what I spend on games, give or take.
