Re: And we thought PSP Go was a bad idea...

Something about virtual keyboard just rubs me the wrong way, although I have heard of keyboard apps in both iOS and Android which make it very tolerable. This might be something I pick up since I'm in the market for a new phone anyways. I'll have to adapt to that dang virtual keyboard eventually =(.

I thought it was just my PS3 being oddly slow, which never made sense to me when I had absolutely no lag playing Resistance 2 online.

I dunno, this could be cool, but it just feels like another half-assed attempt to wrestle some market share from Apple.

Re: And we thought PSP Go was a bad idea...

If they are serious about turning this phone into a gaming device PSN games and a memory slot are a must.

Even better if they dropped the UMD format for PSP games (edit > if they were to release them for this device) and went straight to micro-cartridge games. UMD was a cool concept, but it's only purpose was to allow lolregionprotectedmovies to be played on the PSP. And that failed miserably.

So cartridge it is. It has a much larger storage capacity, data transfer speeds and it's very cheap to produce nowadays, specially considering no PSP/mobile game would go beyond the 4Gb mark any time soon.

Unless Kojima decided to do his magic on the system that is...

All of which begs the question: Why didn't Sony go with this in the first place instead of releasing that monstruosity called Go?

PS > For the record I'm not expecting to play PSP games on this phone, although it would be incredibly awesome if this concept evolved into the PSP2.

Same reason they charged $600 for the PS3 at launch. The only thing bigger than their balls is their ego.

That aside I'm interested in seeing how this will pan out; phones are starting to get pretty neat games, but sometimes they're crippled by lack of good control methods. I don't enjoy using the same screen I'm watching as a controller.

2 gb is one PSP game and 4 gbs is two games. I use a 8 gb memory stick with my homebrew PSP and its rather disappointing. With my DS, I have 100+ games on my 8gb stick and I think there is still room left over for more! lol I just wouldn't want to have a stack of memory sticks, I already swap between 4 sticks on a couple of my PSP's and I've nearly lost them on several occasions. The DS memory cards are even worse, they are the micros and about as big as my pinky nail!

You are preaching to the choir here. I have had an iPhone, have had a couple different Android phones, and have an iPad. I had tons of games on all of them too. I love the little quick bite games that can entertain me while I'm waiting for an appointment! Angry Birds, Plants vs Zombies, Time Crisis, Pac-Man (of course!), Crystal Defenders, Veggie Samurai, Skee Ball, Cake Mania, Bejeweled, Zenonia 2, Cooking Dash, Hotel Mogul, Sneezies, Knights Onrush, etc are the ones I can think of off the top of my head and there are plenty more.

But PSP games? I just can't imagine the abysmal battery life and price of the games. I don't mind spending $1-5 for a game on my phone/iPad but more than that I get very leery. I would imagine that PSP games (for larger developer titles) are going to run $15+, with some being just as much as a UMD release. Then the battery life is a huge concern. With both my Android and iPhone cells, I ran out of juice before the day was done, thankfully I don't work 8 hours a day every day or that would tick me off. I imagine that the PSP phone will probably be even a bigger drain on the battery so I can't wait to see what they are doing in that department.

I don't think that we are ready for a full gaming system + cellphone yet. We need battery technology to catch up along with other tech. Its great to see it advancing in that direction but I'm not ready to buy into it yet with the drawbacks that we have. Give it another 10-15 years and then it will be old hat to have have them combined and even Nintendo might jump into the fray.

Yes the touch screen controls were a pain in the ass at times. They take a while to get used to and they are never as intuitive as hardware controls. I had rpg's on my phones/iPad but rarely played them over the tiny bit games like Angry Birds or Veggie Samurai.

Hey I'm all for that too, who knows if I'll be around in 15 years! lol I love tech and I love gaming and I want to be around to see it all! Honestly, when I think of dying one of the few things that bothers me is that I won't be here to see real virtual reality games (think Holodeck!) and the cool embedded in your skin communication devices/cellphones (think Fringe!).

I just want a Persocon, it would be very sad if they were finally made when I was already on my way out, and couldn't enjoy the synthetic hotness.

A holodeck would be awesome though.

My HTC Aria does not have games on it and I already suffer from battery envy. You will need a Samsung Captivate battery x2 to even make this a possible feasibility. You have to understand that with better graphics you will require additional power. Unfortunately, smart phones already are power hogs even without apps running, so this will not fly well with people who find themselves constantly re-charging the phone.

And you also have to understand the market. This idea will not work because the demographics of phone users are all about communication and not entertainment. If they simply want to listen to music, there's the iPod. Want to play games? DSi and PSP. Sony is trying to convert the phone into a device that is totally ass-backwards in what it was originally intended for.

Also, most phone users play games like Angry Birds, because it's quick, easy and fun. I don't see a whole lot of "quick, easy and fun" games on the PSP.

I want to add that I can see this being the future and how things will work. But for now, with both technological limits (in power) and the usual social issues involved here, I just don't see this working. I think Sony is trying too hard to emulate Apple and Steve Jobs.

Solar panel technology moves along very, very quickly.

The point isn't so much to give "OMG guyz INFINITE BATTERY LIVES", as it is "This will go a much longer time without sitting on the cradle".

Also keep in mind that the guy may've meant 5 minutes of talk time; which uses much more power than an idle phone, and most phones in Japan are used for mailing far more than calling.

Could never tell watching all those J dramas in which they constantly talk on their phones that seem to have a nuclear power plant built in them.

                          This is true.

By the way, how much are basic cellphone plans in Japan nowadays?

He did mean talk time, as he also said it was mostly for charging in an emergency situation if your phone was dead / almost dead. Then again... Would have to be a pretty slow emergency for you to have time to wait an hour for five minutes of talk time. o.o
