I don't think this survey is restricted to women, men can take feminism courses, too. And like TGM said, this would take a bit to fill out.

Men act dumb and fall all over themselves to help female characters (often without even confirming actual gender identity), until high level loot and greater time investment becomes a factor.

In that way its just like real life.

FFXI I started with a male character and made a secondary female character. The male character was a hard worker and his earnings often pillaged by the female character, who was rather high-maintenance due to her being a ranger and a corsair.

Foobar would hit the books, study the ways of Scholar and Beastmaster and use them to make gil and Omgwtfbbqkitten would spend it. Foobar's attire was rather simple and straightforward, never buying more than he needed while Kitten was rather fashion-obsessed. To be fair, a lot of Kitten's gear was Rare/Ex, but writing macros for her was a pain because of the wardrobe she had to carry around. She was changing clothes like three or four times a day and took forever to get out of her Mog House.

Okay, I'll bite. Going to answer as though I still play a few games that I quit, though, because I am kinda between MMOs at the moment. (Bolding my answers to the multiple choice questions, changing my "fill in" answers to purple.)

No. I usually pick a character that kind of looks like me. I'm sometimes put off by obnoxiously large breasts, but newer games now allow you to adjust breast size when creating your character.


4. Does clothing/armor appearance bias you toward a certain gender? If yes, please explain.

(ex: scantily clad clothing, “cooler” looking armor, etc.)

5. How much control/customization do you have over the physical appearance/characteristics of your character? (Please specify which parts you are allowed to customize).

All of the above, really. In WoW there is a lot more customization than in FFXI, which only allows height and a selection of a few preset faces. You can adjust a little bit more than that in WoW, (though I can't remember now, it's been a while since I created my WoW toon).

6. What class/job is/are your characters?

Those would be my main job choices, though I played all of the jobs in XI to varying levels.

a. Mostly men - In WoW, it was more men.

10. How are male characters typically treated?

I'd say a lot of times they will get a bit more respect, not just based on being a guy, but many players just think guy players are better.

11. How are female characters typically treated?

It depends on how they act. Though usually, women will get some level of disrespect for their ability to actually play the game until they prove themselves. Some women don't admit to being female just because they don't want people to think they suck, or blame their mistakes on being a woman. I have faced this on a few occasions. It's very hard to be taken seriously as a woman gamer sometimes, and yes, my mistakes are blamed on being a woman, not just being a human.

A lot of women are treated like whores - then again, a lot of these women flirt with every guy on the planet to get stuff, so they get what they give. This unfortunately leads to some males treating all women like they're all just out to get stuff. In some of the more mature guilds/linkshells, this isn't a problem.

Some women are also huge drama queens, and so a lot of women get treated with kid gloves so that they don't "explode" and cause drama, even though most girls just want to play the game. This can - and does - lead to favoritism in guilds.



12. How do male players typically act?

Most of them just want to play, as far as I can tell. The majority is accepting of all gamers as long as they can perform their role in the party/raid/event/etc. Some are immature idiots, but that's the nature of the MMO. I don't think there's any "one" way male players act.



13. How do female players typically act?

The majority act like someone who wants to play the game. Then again, as I've said previously, some act like they deserve worship just for being a female who stooped to the level of playing this game. Most of us women HATE those chicks. I'm one of the players who just wants to play. I don't want any drama, and I don't want any free stuff.

However, there are a ton of drama queens and item whores. This is changing, though - a lot of men are realizing that women play these idiotic games and basically play them, so I think a lot less women are able to get away with acting like drama whores.

I can imagine that this person has put this up on several MMORPG forums. I realize that our little forum is a unique community, in that, we all are more mature (well most of us). How does this person know that the answers are "serious" from most of the other forums? And how does this person know if the answeree is female? I don't know, if I were doing something like this and it was so "serious" then I would lurk on a forum and figure out who was female and then PM them this request.
