  • EVERYBODY DON'T DIE

First contact may be coming. You'll have to wait until around 2050 though.

    Pretty interesting stuff.

But if there is intelligent life on other worlds, who says they want to make first contact with us or consider us worth conquering?

Also, zee nuclear wessels, he needs to find zem.

    He haz found zem!

I doubt there could be any kind of advanced life on that planet, seeing as how must of its resources would be tied up on either side of the planet.

There is a massive error in that article. Gilese 581 is not a red giant, its a red dwarf. If it was a red giant, that thing would fry with on orbital period of 37 days. Kind of odd, since they classify it correctly in the image caption and fact table.

If you want to think of something mind boggling. All 6 of Gilese's planets orbit within the the orbit of Venus around our sun. 5 are thought to be rocky, 1 a hot Neptune.

Said pulse of light was the civilization there blowing themselves up in a nuclear war.

That's more than a little hilarious. Not only did they get their facts wrong and say it's a red giant, they went ahead and dug out a definition of a red giant. Yeah I would NOT be excited about an earth-like planet in a red giant system. "Grats! it'll be habitable just long enough for our city-ships to reach it!"

The orbital thing is a bit wonky, too. Shouldn't a gaseous planet tend to be further away than the rocky fellas? Isn't that many planets that close to the same orbit just asking for crazy gravity effects and -- umm -- collisions? EDIT: I finally saw the picture of the orbits. I see you mean "Venus or within", not "they're all right at the same spot!" Yeah, makes sense they'd be closer since the sun's tiny.

I always wanted to do a tabletop campaign on a planet with a Hot Jupiter constantly eclipsing the sun.

Err yeah, I should have worded that better. They all have separate orbits, within the orbital distance of Venus. That is still 6 large space objects in a very small space!

There are many gas giant exoplanets that are orbiting within the distance of Mercury.

Yep! So lets start working on those spaceships and getting out asses over there so we can pollute and ruin another planet!

It's funny when articles like this come out, because it's like, 1.) It is for real far away guys. It would take us like, 300,000 years (I am just making this number up) or something to reach a place like that at our current speed. It's not like we've even sent a manned expedition to our nearest planetary neighbor, much less one that is several dozen light years away. 2.) The whole "HAY NEW PLANET TO RUIN" comments. I mean, srsly.
