This is blatantly false. Even if you yourself cannot perceive it your reaction time is slowed.

Denying science and reason, always a good way to support your argument, right? You don't know how your brain works. I don't either, but the folks who specialize in that field of knowledge sure do, and I defer to them.

That doesn't mean what you're doing is safe, it just means it hasn't cost you anything yet.

I'll say it again, you stop threatening the lives of other people with your negligent driving practices and I'll stop telling you to stop driving on behalf of everyone on the road whose lives you casually gamble with.

Fucking science, how does it work?

The bottleneck, on the left, is the best representation of how sensory data reaches your sensory store. There's no possible way you could pay attention to every piece of sensory input your body records, so it's filtered down to what's important, context specific, or your name. If you're on the cell phone, that's cutting into the amount of sensory data you can attend to, thus reducing your attention to all other sources of sensory data.

Re: Soooo...what do you do when you are driving?

To say external things distract drivers, is stating the obvious. Stating that hands free devices are equally as dangerous as using a hands on device is a falacy. I read the study. I've read many studies. They in no way say they are equal. They say they aren't as safe as people think. They also say adjusting the radio, passengers talking, birds in the sky, objects in the rear-view mirror that may appear closer than they are, arguments you just had with a loved one, thinking about the argument you're about to have with a loved one, the sex you may or may never have had... oh... let's just lump it all in with "life" ... is all just as too distracting.

News Flash folks: Life is distracting. Wow... big surprise.

So let's get rid of all that distraction (ie life) so everyone can feel safe. Maybe we should all just take as much life away as we can so people feel a little safer. People are always gonna die so long as life exists. So I guess we won't be safe until we annihilate everything and every one.

News Flash part deux: The roads aren't safe. Wow... bigger surprise.

If you think you are safe at all when traveling at 50-80mph upon a paved or unpaved surface with hundreds upon thousands of other people operating large projectiles no matter how attentive they may be, you are deluding yourself.

I guess, I'm not saying distractions aren't distracting (yvw for the double negative). I'm saying we should all kill ourselves for the good of mankind.

By now I think of just about everything quantifiable in video game terms. I don't bother trying to fight it. It's like the Tetris Effect.
News Flash folks: Life is distracting. Wow... big surprise.
That doesn't mean we should add more distractions while we drive. That's like saying "There's always going to be interference, why bother making a phone that'll have less of it?" Or "I'll never be the best at <x>, so why even try to get good at it?" I can't control whether there's birds in the sky or a hot woman flashing her tits at me in the sidewalk. I can control whether I talk on the phone.
News Flash part deux: The roads aren't safe. Wow... bigger surprise.
Again, that doesn't mean it's OK to make them even more unsafe. Anyone who thinks so also thinks seat belts and lane dividers are useless, and drinking while driving is OK.

Re: Soooo...what do you do when you are driving?

There's a difference between having your driving impaired by additional actions you take while driving and not realizing you are being impaired in the first place.

I drive a lot, and there have been a few times where having my full attention on the road (and specially my hands on the wheel) has saved me from what could've been serious crashes.

And I seriously doubt driving with one hand busy with their mobile/sandwich/themselves/etc. hasn't caused the invincible people who are better drivers than most at least a few close calls even if it didn't end up in an accident.

Also, one study shows you spend the same resources talking on the phone as you do when talking normally or using a handsfree, since you are well... talking. What is doesn't consider is the additional bourden of actually handling your phone with one hand while trying to maneuver with the other, nor does it consider how some people hold their phones and how that can even block a part of their peripheral vission while doing so. And doesn't consider the time it takes to put down the phone to make a sharp maneuver either -which is much slower using only one hand- among other things.

But to each their own, lets just hope they never get involved in a serious accident because of it.

Re: Soooo...what do you do when you are driving?

I think the fact that three teenage girls nearly killing me with their cars while talking on cell phones is quantifiable scientific data for keeping cell phones and cars out of the hands of younger women. Or at the very least, forbidding access to both.

I remember the second one quite well. She rear-ended my Toyota Corolloa. I looked in the rearview and saw her say "Omigawd, I'll call you right back."

There was the dumb preacher's son who hit me while crossing in a crosswalk, ignoring the red light and speeding in a college zone. I can't be sure if he had a cell phone, as I was knocked delirious, but he clearly didn't see the other stopped cars, the red light or me emerging from behind one of the stopped cars. There was construction going on, so I didn't see or hear him coming in the midst of all the dust being kicked up, but I took it on good fath in others that they would obey the laws just like the other drivers near me had

Boy I was wrong about that one. Thankfully my bad habit or wearing a backpack on the shoulder saved my back from being snapped. Textbooks absorbed the shock, leaving me with a fracture on my right arm and a concussion. And some asphalt in my face.

His reaction, by eyewitness accounts, was "Omigodomigondomigod." I still don't remember shit, but I'm told I was asked my name by the first responder, to which I responded "Izzaan Huumphersund" or something like that. I just remember waking up in a hospital and being asked to sign something to airlift me to Winston-Salem and wondering why my arm and head hurt.

Considering all the facts, something was distracting that guy because construction, college zone and red lights just weren't enough to tip him off to slow down. I'm sure before I started getting my settlement he shaped up as a driver. For good measure, I went to go see his father preach one Sunday after I was cleared to return to college. After the service he was shaking peoples hands, I just wanted to show there were no hard feelings, but I was rather satisfied all the same to see that guy turn white as a sheet when I introduced myself.

I'm sure some people do just fine with a bluetooth headset, but I still don't trust kids with either that or the cell phoneThere are people that get, shall we say, absorbed in conversation. Those people need to lay off the phone. Truckdrivers? Nature of the beast, people don't get licensed to drive them if they're so easily distracted.

You've not offered supporting data that suggests they are equall dangerous either.

"Talking on a hands-free cell phone while driving may not be much safer than talking on a hand-held phone" ~ Even hands-free cell phones may impair driving

Your article does NOT state they are equally unsafe which is what many of your posts imply. In fact, none of the research seems to have compared the two against each other. It says distractions are unsafe. Saying these are equal is making assumptions and reading falsely into the information presented. Yes distractions are distracting... thank you Cpt. Obvious.

All this said... I actually don't take/make cell phone calls while driving. Usually I don't answer unless it has to do with getting directions to my destination. Then I keep it short and insist they keep to the point. I hate phone conversations mostly anyway.

Mostly, when I'm driving, I freak out about all the other people who are trying to multitask while operating dangerous machinery (i.e. a car). Especially the ones who are convinced that only *other* people get in accidents. There's science about that too.
