  • Senseless...

I thought I would post this here for anyone that would like to help out. PAX had its share of tragedy this past weekend, as I'm sure some of you heard. Now they have opened a fund for the family:

    The Brian Wood Memorial Trust

If you aren't aware, here is some information on what happened:

"Further information regarding the tragic death of Relic Entertainment's Brian R. Wood in an automobile accident Friday night reveals that the developer's final act saved the life of his wife and their unborn child.

As we reported yesterday, the lead designer on Company of Heroes Online was driving his Subaru Outback with his wife Erin of five years, pregnant with their first child, when they were struck by a speeding Chevy Blazer driven by 21 year-old Jordyn B. Weichert.

The 33-year-old developer was killed in the crash. His wife and their child survived the crash, thanks to Brian's last-minute sacrifice.

According to Erin Wood, she and the baby would not have survived the crash had Brian not swerved at the last minute, taking the brunt of the impact himself.

"All the policemen say that if we had hit the car head-on all of us would be dead. At the very last second (Brian) braked really hard and turned right so that he would be put in the path of the SUV and not me and the baby, and that is the only thing that saved us both."

Rather than a head-on collision, the Chevy Blazer struck the driver's side of the Wood's Subaru, crushing the roof and killing Brian instantly. His wife escaped with a non-life-threatening head injury.

Along with being a lead designer with Relic Entertainment, Wood also sang baritone with the Espiritu Choir in North Vancouver and enjoyed spending time outdoors.

He will be remembered fondly by his co-workers, his family, and of course, his wife and child.

"He was always sacrificing himself for me and the baby," said Erin Wood.
"He was the most amazing warm-hearted man you would ever meet who loved his job, loved his family, and was just my rock. I am not quite sure how I am supposed to live the rest of my life without him. He truly was a gift and I wouldn't change a thing of any of our moments together. (The baby is) due Nov. 5 so it will come quick and then I look forward to seeing little glimpses of Brian in our baby and that gives me a lot of strength right now."
According to Washington State police, evidence of drug use by the driver and passengers of the Blazer was discovered at the scene, and the occupants of the vehicle were known to police.

The driver of the Blazer, 21-year-old Jordan Weichert, was allegedly removing a sweater while driving, asking her 22-year-old passenger Samantha Bowling to take the wheel. Both survived the accident. Weichert is being charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and one of vehicular assault. Bowling is being investigated for the same charges.

The other two passengers in the Blazer died in the crash, 25-year-old Jacob Quistorf and 26-year-old Francis Malloy.

Brian's father, Ed Wood, says the family harbors no anger towards Weichert and Bowling, but feels they need to be put away so the tragedy doesn't happen again.

"I don't feel a sense of anger. I feel a sense of profound loss. I don't feel a need for vengeance or anything of that sort. But I do believe these people need to be put away. They are going to kill somebody else and themselves and they need to be put away just for the good of society."

I donated. Such a loss of talent is definitely a tragedy.

I would ask what kind of moron takes off a sweater while driving, but considering the things I've seen people do while driving, it doesn't surprise me. Ugh, what a stupid, stupid, and entirely preventable tragedy.

Yes, it is such a tragedy. All the lives affected by one stupid decision. Some people just don't think about how they are driving over a ton of metal and that its a lethal weapon.

My daughter does stupid shit like this when driving.....but hopefully she's not on drugs. Once she was at a stop light and it turned green, she accelerated, her purse tipped over, a PEN fell out, and she felt the need to bend over and pick it up which lead to her pushing too hard on the gas pedal and rear ending the car in front of her. I'm quite sure that she texts while driving too...and I've told her that if I ever see her doing it while she is driving my grandchildren around that I will call the cops and report her to social services. (Put a little fear of god into her because she's deathly afraid of her children being taken away! That would mean no additional income!! *GASP*)

Now this poor young woman has to struggle with raising a child on her own and enduring lifes stress without a partner all because someone wanted to take their sweater off but were too lazy to pull over and do it. The pain of seeing her husbands face every time she looks into her babys eyes will be both comforting and horrific.

Also the young lady that caused this tragedy will have to live with the guilt of killing another human being because of her stupidity for the rest of her life. It will be forever ingrained in her memory and in her records. It will taunt her in her dreams and haunt her in her waking hours. I would not want to be her.

Not just some stranger either. Two of the passengers in her vehicle died as well. So, yeah, a lot of guilt.

Not sure what he meant by "put away". When you "put down" a dog it means you kill it. "Put away" would mean, committing them into a mental institution or in prison? Either way, those girls are getting away awfully light. It amazes me how things work out like this in life where the guilty party always seem to walk away with barely any loss and you got innocent people dying around them left and right.

Blessed? Cursed? I don't even know anymore...

                  Re: Senseless...

When I read it, I see the phrase "put away" as in put in jail for life, and I don't know what to think about that.

Not saying it is the right decision, not saying that it is the wrong decision. How do you have someone pay for something like this, where they did a very stupid, dare one say criminally stupid thing that killed 3 people?

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I know in Wisconsin you can get drunk and run someone down and get about 3-5 years in prison. I always said that if I wanted someone dead that I'd know how to do it.

Company Of Heroes Designer's Widow Tells Her Story

"Erin Wood, the widow of Company of Heroes Online lead designer Brian Wood who died tragically in a car crash earlier this month, appeared on NBC's Today this morning to discuss the accident and how she's coping with her loss.

                      <msnbc video here>

Seeing Erin talk about the accident that claimed Brian Wood's life earlier this month really brings the tragedy of the accident into perspective. The story was heartrending as it was, but seeing Erin discuss her husband's last-minute heroism and how he will be remembered by them is almost too painful to watch.

As reported last week, a memorial trust has been established to help Erin and the couple's unborn child through this trying time.

Visit the Brian Wood Memorial Trust webpage to see how you can help.

In Texas, you lure a drunk to your lawn and shoot them and claim self defense AND trespassing. I wonder if they started doing that to migrant workers.

Homicide/Murder 2 (is that Manslaughter? I'm not sure on the exact legal jargon here) It still carries a life sentence like Murder 1, but you can still get parole.
