Same goes for graduate school. So try not to make a blanket statement like that. =p
I'm talking about high school students. I've seen it happen a few times as I was in a class with fail people.

Yes its true. In my area, my daughter was pushed through even though I protested. She was an A student in elementary school. In her first year at middle school, she went down to B-. I figured there would be a drop and didn't think that it was a big deal. Over the next 2 years, I found out that she was skipping school, lying about doing homework, etc. She was failing everything. I had numerous meetings with teachers and counselors. I eventually asked them about failing her and they said they don't do that. They've found that it was detrimental to a child's self esteem to be held back and see their peers succeed. So they kept pushing her through for those 2 years but when it came to high school, I tried to put my foot down. I felt that pushing her through to high school would be devastating since she did not have the knowledge and education to succeed there. Their response was that they would only keep her behind until she was 16, that was there rule. She would turn 16 three weeks after the start of the school year so they wouldn't bother keeping her behind. They just kept pushing her and pushing her through even though she was making no effort whatsoever and treating school like it was only a place to socialize. I really do not see what the point is by not letting kids learn from their failures, it certainly makes it harder to be a parent.

Oh and a side note to this, after she went to high school and wouldn't show up to classes, they were going to penalize ME for this. They were implementing a program to make the parents responsible for the kids not showing up to class and/or failing school. I was PTA parent, I volunteered to go on field trips or help out in class, I was a Cub Scout Troup Leader, etc. I was FAR from an uninvolved parent but yet they wanted to treat me like a deadbeat even though I had been working with them for years with my daughters issue. The school system needs a god damn overhaul... with this bad of an educational system its no wonder smartphones can't play MMO's!! (ROFL last ditch effort to be on topic!!)

        Re: FFXI - on smartphone?

im not sure when or where i had seen this.. but there was a video that had come out shortly after the original iphones release that showed how to set up to use the phone as basically a console clone and it would pull your game off your console and allow you to play it on your phone.

the video showed them installing a 3rd party program on it, and through the wireless service in his house was able to control the character and all that through the phone. granted he was still in his house and i "think" it was on his ps2or3 the game was still running it just sent the game to his phone and he controlled it all and saw it through his phone.

video showed him sitting on his couch infront of his tv and all that using the phone to control the character on the screen of his phone and the tv in the background also showed his character doing the same.

seems if that was possible and the phone could handle it there is probably an app out there somewhere that would allow ya to bypass the need to be in your own home network and game on, on a console of some sort.

Well my son has used remote desktop to futz around on FFXI via his phone but its not enjoyable. He's done it with his PSP too but again not enjoyable.

since we are on the smartphone gaming thing.. ran across this, this morning and felt it was worth attaching to this thread.

Is the smartphone gaming challenge real? - Technology & science - Games - msnbc.com

also hit this at same time, guy is suing NCSoft over the 20,000 hours he spent playing lineage II.. lol

            [ame=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30501433/vp/38790916#38790916]Tech Watch[/ame]

called a friend of mine this morning and said "hey how many play hours you got logged in.. he gave me the days 1100 something.. broke out the calculator and he has like 27,880 hours playtime.. told him to find a lawyer maybe he would get more than the 3 mill this idiot was suing for.

              Re: FFXI - on smartphone?

Smartphone gaming is meh, I have an Iphone with 0 game apps because I have a nintendo DS and a PSP both of which to play games on the go. At home I sit on my couch and play computer/or console games on my big TV, it is much more enjoyable than curling up in a corner using an Iphone.

It's not easy to emulate the PS2 on a smartphone so I'd say it won't be for at least 5 years and by then the servers would've been taken down.

True but... By then we'd have a stronger phone that could probably run FFXIV.

there is a point where it needs to stop being called a "phone" and call it a micro PC with telecommunication capabilities.......

Sorry but really....show me a phone that can run WoW/FFXI/FFXIV and it is no longer a phone, but a very small PC.
