  • Our friends at Westboro Church have decided...

...all you comic loving fiends need to read the bible instead!

"The Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is headed by Fred Phelps and which has made headlines over the past few years for a series of protests of events such as the funerals of Meet the Press host Tim Russert (because of his Catholicism and what they termed his "tolerance of homosexuality") and Jerry Falwell (whom they termed a "false prophet') and perhaps most notably the funerals of American servicemen killed overseas, have announced that they plan to picket the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con from 1:15 pm to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 22.

The reason they're going to protest the con? We think it's best described in their own words, as posted on their website:

"Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry."

I wonder if when Fred Phelps prays to God to stop someone from punching him in the face, his prayer is answered?

The answer is of course, no. Then Fred just gets all litigious on your ass and makes a big media event out of it, so it's not really worth the effort. What a bunch of assholes. The thing that bugs me (and really, I'm not trying to talk about WBC here, because they are some crazy motherfuckers, one and all) is how they have their children out there holding signs and preaching words of hate. That just really gets to me.

Really, is there anything these twits won't protest?

They don't like other churches, so they don't like other christians.
      They hate all other religions.
      They hate all other lifestyles.
      They're probably racist, too.

I think their state should just pull a prank on them. Have everyone go out of state for a day, pretend the rapture happened and God didn't include them.

They don't hate sign making shops.

Though I would love to see them protest one that pissed them off.

        GOD HATES SIGNS!
PEOPLE WHO MAKE SIGNS WILL BURN IN HELL!
        PROTESTING STUPID SHIT IS FUN!

I gave Malacite thanks. I'm relatively sure that's one of the signs of the Rapture.

I sincerely hope that the day Fred Phelps passes away, there will be a massive protest at his funeral.

Maybe it will be just what all the other religious folks need to finally come together and get along? World Peace? o.O

                  Zealots are funny.

Although to be fair, I can see his point. I may not agree with him, but I understand his point of view.

I'm just glad phelps is old enough for me to be living when he does pass away, that is going to be one of the highlights of my entire life.

I honestly think WBC is just a big corporate prank to make everyone hate what they stand for and religion in general, i can't think anything else.

I think you need to look at their travel itinerary. For an annoying bunch of inbreds they're on the road all year. Not even NASCAR has that level of dedication.

I think you need to pay attention.

I wasn't talking about the WBC, I was talking about Balfree's disbelief that people could be this over the top, close-minded, and bigoted with an actual religion. Anyone who's been to rural parts of the US (particularly in the Southeast, but also the Midwest and Southwest) would have a pretty easy time believing it.

You don't seem to understand that Balfree actually had a good point, instead you try to dismiss it by labeling people unfairly. When something is too stupid and well-funded to be real, it probably is. WBC's one and only function is to get a rise out of people, pretty much the same job Al Sharpton has. He's a voice for civil rights in his head. Everyone with a functioning brain knows he's just a prick that gets people riled up.

I've lived up north, out west and lots of places in between. Its not that different- only the pace at which people like to live seems to change. Bigotry seems to exist equally in each place I've been to and is often most deftly used by people that want to believe they're not bigots at all.

I live in a melting pot. People tend to get along and try to enjoy each other's company. Living in and "having been to" the southeast are two totally different things.
