Recently it's been hard to watch one of my favorite shows (Boardwalk Empire) because of that very reason. Every scene someone is smoking. EVERY FUCKING SCENE!

Man, I'm so glad I don't smoke regularly. It means I get all the enjoyment with none of the health/addiction problems.

It's probably nothing to worry about.

All smokers that are now trying to quit have said this before. And I mean that, ALL SMOKERS. Just an FYI...

I've only smoked once when I was like 13(?), and I didn't really choke because I was told how to do it "right". So I did, and enjoyed the awful smoke for a few seconds. Felt kinda dizzy for some reason (is that normal?)

Then exhaled and wondered about the sanity of doing something like that. After that episode I never thought about doing something that stupid ever again.

And to this day I still don't understand why people smoke or get drunk or high. o_O

PS > If anything the only fun thing about smoking is holding the cig to try to pretend you are cooler than you really are, but you can do that without lighting the smoke anyway. XD

Yes, the dizzy thing is normal. At least for the first few days. After that it really doesn't happen unless you go without smoking for a while. It's sort-of a mini high in and of itself... although I'm not a huge fan of it.

Also: there's nothing "cool" about holding a cigarette... unless you're a greaser or an outsider. Even then, you'd also need to slick your hair back, wear testical restricting jeans and a 1 size too small leather jacket. Then you're cool. But that's just too much work.

I smoke maybe two or three times a year.

Between that and not being able to find my preferred flavor, I don't think I'm in any real danger of becoming addicted.

                            Let me help:

In D&D there are 6 attributes that govern your character's entire design.

                            Strength
                            - Determines your character's raw strength as well as their damage potential with melee weapons

                            Dexterity
                            - Determines your character's agility and speed as well as their damage potential with ranged weapons. It also determines how easily they can avoid both melee and ranged damage/obsticles.

                            Constitution
                            - Determines your character's hit points and resistance to disease

                            Intelligence
                            - Determines your character's intellect and ability problem solve as well as how quickly they learn new skills. It's also used to determine certain Magical classes spells per day limit.

                            Wisdom
                            - Determines your character's insight, thoughtfulness and resistance to attacks against the mind. It's also used to determine certain other Magical classes Spells per day and various abilities effectivness.

                            Charisma
                            - Determines how other people view your character. This applies to both personality and outward appearance. It also determines how successful you are at charming or intimidating people.

Those attributes are rolled for or "bought" in some way at the beginning of a campaign and recieve very few changes as the game progresses. Enchanted equipment, spells and bonuses recieved as you gain levels are the only real way to increase them.

Based on the values that you roll for each attribute, you gain either positive or negative "Ability Modifiers". The fomula itself is simple, here's a great example:

Lets say these are your attributes you rolled:

                            10 Strength
                            18 Dexterity
                            13 Constitution
                            12 Intelligence
                            9 Wisdom
                            6 Charisma

Your modfiers for each skill are based on it's value. If the value is 10, your modifier is +0. For every 2 points above 10, your modifier goes up by +1 (rounded down). For every 2 points below 10, your modifier goes down by -1 (rounded down). So here are the above-mentioned stats and their modifiers:

                            11 Strength (+0)
                            18 Dexterity (+4)
                            14 Constitution (+2)
                            12 Intelligence (+1)
                            9 Wisdom (-1)
                            6 Charisma (-2)

                            Simple enough.

Now that you know the modifiers, that's really all that matters for pretty much everything. Those modifiers just get plugged into various formulas to determine things like skills, hit points, spells/day, aptitude with skills and damage.

For instance... Armor Class (AC). Armor Class determines how high an attack roll is required in order to successfully land a hit on your character. Here's how it's calculated:

AC = 10 + Dexterity Modifier + Armor Bonus + Shield Bonus + Size Bonus + Misc Modifier (like a spell)

Let's take the modifiers from above and say that you're wearing armor that gives you a +3 to your AC and a Shield that gives you +1.

                            Your AC = 10 + 4(DEX Modifier) + 3(Armor Modifier) +1(Shield Modifier) +0(Size Modifier*) +0(Misc Modifier) = 18

It would take an enemy a roll of 18 (from a D20) to break your armor class and damage you. Obviously an 18 is hard to consistantly roll on a D20... but every player/NPC also get a bonus "to hit" that's calculated in a similar way... but I wont get into that. Assume for the hell of it that whatever is attacking you has an attack bonus of +6. That means that they roll a D20 and add +6 to whatever they get. And thus the game balances itself a little.

Bare in mind that an 18 DEX is unusually high... as is an 18AC... or even a +6 Attck Bonus. I'm just using them as examples.

*Size Modifiers give bonuses or penalties to a character's AC depending on how big they are. Obviously if you're small you're going to be harder to hit... and if you're big you'll be easier to hit. Therefor, small characters (halflings etc...) get a +1 bonus to their AC, while Large Characters (Ogres/Orcs etc...) get a -1 penalty. To balance the game a little, Small characters also take a penalty to the damage they can deal, while large characters get a bonus to it.

The SAVING THROWS you're talking about come in 3 forms and are each effected by both your chosen class and a specific attribute. The 3 saving throws are as follows:

                            Reflex
                            - Directly related to your DEX Modifier
                            - Used to avoid hazards and dangers of a physical form... such as falling boulders or quicksand.

                            Willpower
                            - Directly related to your WIS Modifier
                            - Used to avoid hazards and dangers to the mind... such as psychic attacks or spells like Confusion.

                            Fortitude
                            - Directly related to your CON Modifier
                            - Used to avoid hazards and dangers of a biological or chemical form... such as poisons, acid and disease.

Depending on the class you pick to play, you will get base scores for each of these 3 "saves" that will gradually go up as you gain levels. Those base scores are combined with the ability modifier for the atribute they're affiliated with. Let's say your class is... idk... Rogue. Your base saving throws would be (iirc):

                            REFLEX +2
                            WILL +0
                            FORT +2

Added with the ability modifiers we've been using the whole time, your final Saving Throw scores would be:

                            REFLEX +2(base) +4(DEX) = +6
                            WILL +0(base) -1 (WIS) = -1
                            FORT +2(base) +2(CON) = +4

                            Reflex +6 / Willpower -1 / Fortitude +4

So in regards to your original question...
Originally posted by DakAttack View Post

The saving throw you would be refering to would be Willpower. Now... if the stats we have been using were say... MY STATS... and the challenge rating on resisting wanting a cigarette was say... 16:

I would have to roll a D20 and subtract 1 (for the Will Save Modifier) from whatever the result ended up being. If that final number was a 16 or higher, I would succeed and will myself not to smoke. If the final number was a 15 or lower, I would have failed and given in to my craving.

I must have just had some really lucky rolls the past few weeks.
