This just kinda popped in my head as I was listening to the radio.
I remember something my mom would do was tell me and my sister the music we were listening to in the car on trips was performed by bands that were friends of hers.
Unfortunately she never quite figured out how well-read I was with music, she just thought all I cared about was video games. Her "friends" were Elton John, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles. She always hid the cassettes after playing them, too, so I couldn't see who they were, but I actually already knew.
My father would leave me in a skating rink after school. This was still a big thing in the 80's, so I was pounded with all kinds of music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Of course I shocked my dad with how I took to musical stuff, too, as he always had to pry me out of the arcade or nag at me to get off the NES so he could watch F1 races and Nascar. He too assumed I was just totally preoccupied with games.
I'd get to see my mom ever summer, but I never met Stevie Nicks or Ringo. I never let my mom catch on to the fact I knew she was lying, I mostly kept my nose stuck in my Game Boy anyway.
It also annoyed the shit out of my dad that he had to be trained in piano and I could just walk up to the piano and pick out a melody. I can't read sheet music for shit, either.
