Re: A question for the manly men of DiV. [NO GIRLS ALLOWED]

Electric - I only use when I'm lazy and need to rid myself quick of scruff. I recently just bought the Norelco Speed XL w/ the Jet Clean System to replace a elec. razor my parents bought me long ago... Not a very good razor. I do not recommend circular type razors like that. Should I ever feel the need to spend more money on elec I'll proly stick with TGM's pick of the Braun with the single band of trimming edge.

Mach 3 - best shave I've ever really had. Gillette shaving gel and you're golden. I don't have very thick bristley scruff and I think regular razors work best for that. As for going w/ or against the grain... up to you... if you shave against you get a closer shave but run the risk of shaving burn; but after some practice you don't tend to get shaving burn.

Straight Razor - only in the hands of a professional and I still haven't worked up the courage to have that done or best use is whipping one of these out in a knife fight... nothing says "I'm f'n crazy" like having a straight razor in your hand.

Ps... shaving oil is pretty damn awesome if anyone gets a chance to use any... I rarely ever see it around to buy. 2-3 drops (like eye drop amounts) of the stuff is needed and it's one very close shave.

Shaving oil? Oh good lord its been years since I've seen any. My father used to use it though. I know he switched over to buying almond or sunflower oil (pure stuff) from organic stores after he was diagnosed with cancer. He said it worked the same and was what they used in the other shaving oil he used.

I like this only because I'm pretty sure you've done it at some point.

Well, it is EXACTLY like pouring alcohol on an open wound. Because that is precisely the thing you're doing, only its a million tiny wounds all over your face.

Of course, I'm late to the awesome MANLY thread.

I used to shave with a mediocre electric. It worked well enough but I found that certain spots (namely the jaw just under the ear) were hard to keep consistent, and it was never a close enough shave.

Manual shaving is the way to go. It's even more appealing for people who don't have a lot of facial hair: If you're not ripping a lot out, it's much easier. Back when I first needed to start shaving, I'd do it like once/week and wouldn't even need shaving cream. This is called BAD IDEA now, but it shows how easy manual razor shaving is.

Plus, how can you call yourself A MAN if you've never shaved through the use of sharp blades pressed against your skin?

Oh, also: know the physics of what makes blades cut. Don't move the blade sideways (so the blades are sawing your flesh instead of scraping it). That's how you cut arteries.

Just about anything made by Braun is fairly reliable, especially some of the newer models (and LOL @ TGM posting ^^ he said no girls allowed in BIG BOLD LETTERS!)

Re: A question for the manly men of DiV. [NO GIRLS ALLOWED]

I have used a standard 3 blade Gillette(sp?) razor and an electric razor. While I prefer the shave that a standard razor gives, my skin reacts badly to it for some reason and get's inflamed, many pimples, etc. Looks quite nasty and makes you think of the kid in burger joints who works the frying station. I don't really know why this happens, my Dad and I tend to use the same shaving soap, shave the same way, and it only happens to me. /shrug

The electric razor I currently use is a Braun 360 and I like it quite well. I don't have the skin problems with my other razor, and this razor gives a pretty decent shave. It seems to have some difficulty with a few spots on my face, noticeably under my jaw on the left part of my face, but I shave right handed so that might have something to do with it. There will also be a few hairs that grow close to my face that this has problems picking up. They aren't quite ingrown hair, but they aren't far from it either. Either using a normal razor to pick off the oddball strand of hair works, or pulling the hair away from the face and then running over it with the electric razor tends to work well too.

If you go with a Braun, at least mine came with a recharging/cleaning stand, and you will periodically need to buy more cleaning fluid and replacement heads.

If you go with a standard razor, if you use soap you will want maybe a mug to stick your bar of soap in, shaving brush, razor. Of if you use a gel/cream then I believe you just spray that on your hands and spread it on your face.

If you use a normal razor, he way I shave is to wash my face a bit with warm water first, then dampen the brush in the water. Rub the bristles of the brush over the soap until it's all nice and soapy and then lather up my face. Keep in mind you don't have to lather up your whole face, just the part you are shaving Place the head of the razor flat against your face, and then either shave up or down, I prefer going against the hair so I shave up.

You'll knick yourself a time or two learning with a razor, so don't fret on it too much.

Oh, and I have never, and probably will never, use a straight single blade razor. I'm not terribly comfortable with the notion.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

I do the pre-wash with warm water. I also use cream/gel stuff, not a brush (the current Gillette gel I'm using smells like my dog's flea shampoo!!) and go to town with manual razor.

I've done the whole single blade disposable razor thing. It's not that bad. I also never once cut myself in my first 5 years of shaving. So you don't really have to worry about walking around school with toilet paper stopping up the blood like in movies. You'll definitely give yourself "razor burn" but getting cut isn't really so bad.

Well, that doesn't count cutting the top off of the inevitable pimple.
