Re: are you afraid of the ocean?

I'm deathly afraid of large bodies of natural water....oh screw that even small inland lakes for petes sake! I don't care if I'm on a boat or not....THAT SUCKER CAN SINK!! The reason that I hate water was that my father was a fisherman/boater/alcoholic asshole. So you can imagine what an outing on the boat was like with him.

Once I was living in Aberdeen, Ohio across from Maysville, Kentucky (ya hi to you George...he knew where to get moonshine on a dry Sunday!), and my father would go out on the Ohio River in his boat. Well he loved turning it on a dime while us kids sat on the front clinging to the rails. We'd be screaming that we were slipping and he'd just do it even more. Well many times we'd slip off into the water......nearly under the boat spinning around in circles. I swore at him once when I was in the water and he just left me there. Well HUGE ASS barges hauling cargo use the river and while I was trying to swim to shore one came along and didn't see me. I could feel it pulling me towards it as I frantically was trying to swim away...damn near got pulled under.

Or the time we were on Lake Michigan and the waves were over 6 feet and we were out on a 10 foot boat in it. I had to drive (I was 13) because my father was so stinking drunk. My 2nd eldest sister and her boyfriend was with us and he wanted to show off...he always did that if another male was around (commence the chest beating). Getting us dock was insane because you'd be in a valley with waves towering over you one second and then on top of the peaks able to see if you were going to slam into something or not. Thank god for compasses.

Or the time we were on an inland lake and he insisted I water ski though I didn't want to. But you don't argue with my father unless you want to get the shit beat out of you so of course I did it. He went as hard and fast as he could and took me straight for a nearly submerged tree (though I didn't realize it till it was too late.) He told me to jump it......oooook too late idiot and guess what you're drunk and slurring and I'm 8 feet behind the god damn boat in the surf and can't understand you. Ya I hit it....and hard....and then he was so mad that I didn't jump it and made him look bad that he left me there for a while. Another boat picked me up and took me to shore immediately because I had a concussion and part of the tree impaled into my leg.

            Ahhh...good times...good times.....fuck water...

... .... I'm absolutely fucking speechless. All I can do for my sanity is give you a virtual pat on the shoulder.

*pat* I'm gonna go lie down now.

Oh yeah, and the ocean is alright. For staring at, I guess. Is pretty in a sunset/rise.

Re: are you afraid of the ocean?

It's wierd, I just had a dream about this very subject last night. While I'm not bothered by large bodies of water I do have an unreasoning fear of what lies down in the deep, dark depths. I don't know if it's a throwback to Jaws or something primal but unless I know there's something solid within about 20 feet of me then there's no way I'm jumping in.

Truth be told though, I've never been on open water. I'm afraid of all water that isn't in a shallow pool lol. Brings back memories from gym class back in the 8th grade...Which was nowhere near as bad as TGM's experiences. That being said I'm sure I could survive in a pool that was no deeper than 20 feet now though.

Thats the main reason why people are actually afraid of it (Other than the fact that people cant swim and/or had a horrific accident there.). People are afraid of what they don't know, and cant see. That why people are afraid of the dark as well. They can't see in it, and don't know what is/could be there.

Re: are you afraid of the ocean?

Speaking of the mobs hiding under the water... I remember a few months ago they were showing one of those "OMGWTF ANIMAL DISASTER!" tv shows on TV, and there were some divers who wanted to observe some sharks underwater. So they got in one of those underwater cages to protect themselves against the sharks, and the company that owned the boat with the cage on it, had removed one of the cage bars so there was a wide gap in between the top and the center. (I think they removed it for maintenence and forgot about it.) What happens? Of course the shark flies in there head first and almost kills both of the guys in there. The shark somehow got tangled up and flipped upside down and while he was upside down both guys escaped. If I can find the video on youtube when I get home, I'll post it.
