      You should still reformat anyway.

Yeah, no. I mean I remember hearing it's recommended that you reformat once a year or something like that, but I don't have an external HDD at the moment, nor do I have enough (or any for that matter) DVD's to back up all my files. I know I should, and I will - once I get a job

In the mean time, I'm doing my happy dance

Ah, yeah I know how that goes. I'm still waiting on my office to hook me up with some work they can pay me for.

Assuming you have disk space left over, partition your hard drive, copy all the stuff you need to keep in the other partition.

This. I recommend this to everyone but most people don't want to bother. You should always restrict your C: drive to just as much space as is necessary for the OS and installed programs (plus a few hundred megs free for swap). "My Documents" folders and any other important data should be on a separate logical drive (D: presumably) where they can continue to be safe whenever you decide to wipe C: and reinstall the OS on it. It's far easier to make sure you get install media with your computer, and partition the drive and reinstall the OS right away, rather than leave everything on a single partition until something goes wrong and you need a backup.

How do you do that anyway?

I essentially have 3 HDD's in my PC; totaling 1 TB of space.

C: 455 (all software & system stuff goes here)

D: 9.68 (only about 1.35 is left, and the only file on here is labeled "Recovery" though tbh I've never used this drive...)

E: 465 (hmm weird, I just noticed my E: Drive is totally untouched, 465/465...)

You can control partitioning from the disk management MMC component. Right-click "My Computer" and select Manage, or look for "Computer Management" under Programs > Administrative Tools. You may need to change your profile settings to display the Administrative Tools folder.

In this case it sounds like you could migrate data to E: and then wipe and reinstall on C:. For FFXI in particular you'll want to save the pub and usr folders from POL Viewer's directory, and the USER folder from FFXI's directory. Or you could back up the whole thing including registry settings (there are guides around that detail this, intended for people wanting to copy FFXI from one computer to another without having to update).

Are you sure this is actual drive? Sounds more like the manufacturer put in a partition with a backup of your OS instead of including an install disk with your PC.

I'd like to point out for the *nix-y among us (including OS X friends) that you can do the same thing by placing /home/ on a different partition from the rest of your [system] files. Plus this has the cool side effect of being able to multiboot into different systems and keep all of your files and even application settings (firefox etc.) across all of them, if you have any reason to do that.

You can just install the game and then paste your old PlayOnline folder over it. POL will check the files when you first run it but other than that you won't have to redownload the updates. I do this pretty much every single time I need to reinstall Windows or install FFXI in a new PC.

That's probably the case since lately no one I know including myself has a Vista install disc.

I actually don't care for that one bit.

This is true; however, it's still much faster to skip the POL/FFXI install and just import a registry key and run regsvr32 on a couple DLLs. Aside from the DLL registrations, the only registry settings POL/FFXI needs are the obvious ones under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PlayOnlineUS
