    Former Super Mario Bros. Super Show star 'Captain' Lou Albano dies

    For many gamers in their twenty-somethings, "Captain" Lou Albano is best remembered for his portrayal of Nintendo's titular mascot in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. We regret to inform you that Albano has passed away at the age of 76.

    Acting on numerous tips, we were led to details on PopEater, which reports that Albano passed away at his home in Mount Vernon, NY. Family members confirmed on Monday that Albano was under hospice care for an undiscovered condition. Albano leaves behind a lasting legacy in the wrestling world and fond childhood memories of doin' the Mario for many Joystiq staff members.

    I have a few of the VHS tapes. Some of the old clips still float around on youtube, I just wish I could've found the ones with MJ's music in them before they "fixed" it due to copyrights. Arent seasons 1 and 2 floating around on DVD?

      I used to love the Super Mario Bros Show. Mickey Mouse died recently too. I'm pretty sad.

        Yup, my friend got me one of them a few years ago. They're honestly not that good, I still haven't managed to finish watching all the episodes. If anything they're more along the lines of something that you know is really bad, but you can enjoy it anyway if you squint real hard and don't take it seriously.

        I was hoping they'd be something more along the lines of the old Valiant comics. Someday I'm gonna have to hunt the rest of those down.

          Could have sworn Capt. Lou was also known for professional wresting and appearing in Cindi Lauper videos. I think being Super Mario was just what he was best known as to gamers.

                  The Super Mario Bros Super Show was pretty much the only legit US Saturday morning cartoon based on a video game back in its day. Well that and the short-lived Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon (the one the Archie comics were based on.) It also had plenty of celebrity guest stars according to Wikipedia, but I was way too young to know if anyone was famous.

                    Epic Mario Throwback! These were not the originals because they actually had MJ's version of the song. They were both removed due to copyrights lol, replaced by these, and then later totally removed if i remember right.

                        I loved the show to death as a kid, especially The Legend of Zelda segments they sometimes aired. "Well Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuse Meeeeeeeee Princess!"


                        And yes, the show had a lot of famous people like Magic Johnson and Roddy Piper on the show, as well as various music hits from the time; Danger Zone, Secret Agent Man, Rocking Robin, & Rolling on the River to name a few. I don't remember all of them, and I sure as hell can't recall any Michael Jackson songs being played.

                        It was corny and badly written but it's still nostalgic gold to a 90's kid like me. That Sonic cartoon was great too, since as you pointed out, it was based on the Comics which IIRC are still going today. I collected them up until about... 3, 4 years ago when the price kept going up and the local carriers stopped ordering them.

                            I'll never forget him for the WWF + Cindy Lauper vidz... I barely remember the live action Mario show cuz I lived in the stix and barely got to see it.
