Re: Need some advice on living conditions and such in other states.

Texas can be very hot indeed, but supposedly we're in a phase of a 20 or so year drought cycle where we're hotter and drier than normal. El Nino is supposed to be coming back this fall, so things should start getting better.

    Also, no state income tax.

And big D is biiiiiig. The Metroplex area is enormous, and not shrinking.

As for me, I live in Texas because I hate the cold weather. Anything below 40F and I am not happy.

EDIT: and Dart Rail is made of win, unlike Houston's commuter rail. They're getting ready to add a couple of new lines, and will reach both Love Field and DFW within a few years. (Trinity Rail Express already goes by DFW, but it runs less often and costs more than Dart Rail will.)

Tampa is worse than Atlanta, and doesn't have a decent mass transit system to boot.

I wouldn't know, but there's no train system here, and the bus system is really lacking. Not to mention the clusterfuck that is crossing the bay.

Let me put it this way.

If I wanted to use the local mass transit system to get to school, I would have to walk a mile and a half to get to the bus stop. From there, the best available route is one hour of riding the bus.

The bus stop is less than two miles from the school.

              I still don't miss MARTA.

DC is the worst, and I speak from the collective experiences of everybody in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and everybody else who travels up and down route 95 each day and year.DC's beltway, 495, is an on-and-off parking lot forever, while anything attached to or bisecting it is a parking lot twice a day, to varying degrees of total duration, sometimes up to half the day.

If you don't like hot weather I can't really recommend Fort Worth. However it is a fun city and I would place it above Dallas and Houston as place I would want to live.

Edit: Cost of living if you try to get a place inside the city can be high (Duh), but you could choose to live in a suburb like Arlington which is directly in between FW and Dallas. Would you be working out of Alliance Airport?

I found DC, Arlington and Georgetown pretty easy to get around.

Been to a number of those places listed. An outsider's view, I'd stay away from Houston unless you really enjoy measuring the seconds between the next air-conditioned building, the humidity and pollution there is brutal and the sprawling nature of the place just gives you this sense of a city desperately missing a soul. I'm not a huge fan of LA but if you go a little north there are some really quirky little places, like Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo. Oakland seemed nice enough but I literally drove through, although you have some amazing national parks within a day or two's ride. Utah just scared me. No offense to any mormons who post here but that on the two occasions I've been to Moab it was like a combination of Stepford Wives and The Village.

And damn you all for making me want to live over there. It's been over five years since I was last there and every time I have to leave I do so grudgingly.

Was going to suggest Anchorage Alaska as its a decent size city but not too crowded. But looks like you got your choices.
