There is no such debate in China, which uses the same three-drug cocktail as the U.S. federal government and most U.S. states: sodium thiopental to make the condemned unconscious, pancuronium bromide to stop breathing, potassium chloride to stop the heart.

Whenever statistics or lecture material are tied to a moral issue, always be skeptical of their truthfulness. The items might be "true", but the intention isn't to get you to learn them, but to believe in them and pass them on. The facts themselves do not matter, only the mantra you'll write on your placard does.

Take a Political Science class--therein, you will read books that take stands on issues and therein you will write papers both for and against the ideas in those books regardless of whether you hold said positions or not. This type of thought process will help you to understand when someone may be taking advantage of you to further their own personal values and beliefs.

I only disagree with the practice of sensationalizing information to distort perception. All of the above statements are generally made sensational... Let me give you an example:

My high school health teacher advised us that anal sex was bad because there is (and this is an actual quote), "a lot of ripping and tearing..." while he said this he would (for some reason) slap the back of one hand into the other to make a clapping sound... Leaving his class, one would think anal sex is in fact something for which you should seek medical attention for after engaging in. This is why girls are so afraid to let their boyfriends "go down to brown town, " and I think it's a terrible shame.

There was once a man named Marshall Applewhite who was able to convince 38 people...THIRTY EIGHT PEOPLE...to commit suicide so that they could board a space ship that was hiding behind the Hale-Bopp Comet.

There once was a man named Adolph Hitler who convinced a large enough percentage of Germany's (then) 70 million person population that the world would be better off without Jewish people and that it was ok to treat them like animals. This theme was replayed by Slobodan Milosevic, Rwandan Military groups, and even Jewish people themselves attempted to purge their "promised land" of people who were already living there.

I believe the answer lies in an answer that I got from a High School student when I asked him to explain why he engaged in behavior that the vast majority of people would consider to be idiotic:

Death penalties are obscenely expensive in the US. Not because of the procedure, though, it's because of that pesky "justice system". Death penalty cases cost a lot more, take longer, are more complicated, and are far more likely to be overturned. Given the way you've acted in this thread, I would guess that the problem was you not paying attention to what was being said, not your professor being a douche.


One of the biggest reason the death penalty is falling into disuse (de jure or de facto) is because it's just so clumsy when you have human rights. Ignoring whether the death penalty itself is a violation of the right to life is up to opinion; but it's somewhat inarguable that implementing a perfect solution to an imperfect system will lead to irreparable miscarriages of justice. More than that, as I said, with human rights, this cases are simply a very large expenditure. China doesn't give a shit about giving people proper trials, so it's easy for them. The only other country that's generally considered 'first world', 'industrialized', etc. that still performs death penalties is Japan, which has a famously unequal justice system (something like a 99% conviction rate).

EDIT: IIRC, the problem with the three drug cocktail is that it isn't always effective, so if the subject isn't knocked unconscious, yes, they would feel themselves slowly choking to death. I believe the way I heard it described was along the lines of 'drowning in air'. I remember hearing at one point a proposal to replace the cumbersome three drug system with an apparently cheaper, easier, more humane, etc. morphine overdose, although I'm sure that has downsides that weren't brought up.

One of the "perks" to lethal injection is less mess and usually a quiet death. The problem with morphine overdose is that the person will vomit, sometimes to the point of rupturing blood vessels which is an even bigger mess. They also go into convulsions.

I've heard that theoretically hanging is still the most effective and painless way to do it. Stressing "theoretically". Nevermind the guy who was hung for robbing trains, gained a lot of weight after they measured him for the hanging, then when he dropped his head popped off.
