good for him in my opinion. he's only human and at 23 years old he's still got along life ahead of him. let him do what he wants. by all means if it was performance enhancing drugs then thats a different story. but its a so-called "recreational" drug, if anything it'll give us brits a chance if he continues with it /smirk

Last I checked 75% of the rest of the world looks the other way or actually legal sells marijuana and it's use. The history of why it's illegal in america is so saturated with political corruptness, it's current illegality is a joke. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 8 years, it was legalized.

It would have made my day if Michael Phelps said he was "High" When he won 5 of his gold medals.

Not that I was looking to Phelps for any inspirational wisdom, but you can't win a dozen gold medals and not expect the world to be watching you.

Also, placing pot smoking on the level of homosexuality and "coming out of the closet" is laughable at best.

Why?

Its easy to lie about being a pot smoker, much easier than admitting who and what you really are. Most people who claim to be stoned or drunk on the internet are lying anyway.

What I'm saying is the use of marijuana obviously didn't hold Phelps back from achieving the pinnacle of athletic excellence any more than it stopped Clinton, Bush or Obama from obtaining the most powerful office in the world. In light of these achievements it seems disingenuous to argue that marijuana itself is a destructive substance that ruins people and has no place in our culture. It can be used responsibly and irresponsibly by people who were going to screw up their lives or not regardless of the substance, same as many other perfectly legal inebriants as well as our shared hobby. Moralizing the use of the substance is irrational in my judgment and does little if any service to our society. The only reason what he did was wrong is that it calls into question the rationality of our rule of law.
