It's not too recent but I just found out about it, and I found it very interesting. What's funny is that I had seen a similar concept in my favorite manga (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou) where androids can transmit/receive data from devices such as cameras through their tongues.

What a bizarre choice using your tongue as the new input vector ...

Seems like a quaint stopgap technology though. Functional prosthetics probably aren't too many years in the future.

I saw some very interesting ideas going into basically turning pictures into binary sequences; black and white dots. These black and white dots would then be read like sheet music and turned into a series of beeps, which would allow someone to see the scene. See Seeing with Sound - The vOICe

From what I understood, the images are "drawn" on his tongue with electrical impulses, kind of like you could draw an image with your finger on someone's back and have them try to guess what it is. Apparently with enough use, the person begins to learn how to visualize the images drawn on the tongue.

Isn't that how Snakes "See" ?

No; they smell through their tongues, and use the scent to track prey. Other than that, most snakes can see with their eyes, though how well varies from species to species.

Also, that vOICE thing looks pretty cool.

I help my GF see all the time with the use of my tongue. It's pretty amazing.
