I did extensive testing in this area as a kid. There was a pond on the farm out in the pasture with the horses where we would fish sometimes. We'd catch little sunfish and since the electric fence was right by us, we'd electrocute the fish on it.

I used to pull the wings off a fly and then tie a string around its neck and keep it as a pet. Same with grasshoppers. I hope to teach these joys to my grandsons since their mother hardly even takes them outside. For pete's sake, the 2 yr old was afraid of GRASS when he moved in here!

Oh I remember the days of my youth when Grandma would slaughter the chickens. I got the fun job of picking up the heads and putting them in the bucket. They'd still be blinking at me as if "WTF JUST HAPPENED GDI!?" and the bodies running around with no heads on them was endlessly hilarious. LOL

Talking about efficiency in regards to meat eating is just stupid. It's incredibly wasteful. Think about how much food a cow eats in a day. Now think about how many days it takes to raise it to slaughter. That's a ton of food. And that's not even counting all of the energy it takes to take care of them day-to-day, slaughtering them, and transporting the meat.

Ideally the cow is eating something I can not eat.... note also other forms of meat are far more efficient than cows, in fact scientists in Australia the other day were telling people to eat kangaroo instead because of the draw the cows had upon the land. In Korea dog was a stable source of meat as cows were too wasteful.. As for your argument.... errr... I don't have stats to refute or support and if you do, by all means support it with some Biological or Ecological based weight. My understanding of the situation though is that it is too difficult to get a complete diet from the available fruits, legumes, and veggies within a given area and that you need a wide variety of such to get complete amino acid profiles and what not, doing so requires the need to farm and grow plants in a variety of climates and then transport them for consumption which then of course costs more money, expends energy, and is a hassle that I feel would be close to impossible if you went back in time to early civilization before advanced transportation and refrigeration techniques. I also view our digestive system as being made to eat only certain types of plants and only certain types of meats as we lack a cecum, an organ that aids in digestion possessed by animals that eat starches.

You also ideally don't eat what your meat source eats, and your energy put in to taking care of it should be fairly low, such as the case with hunting. Raising animals for consumption is a good idea, but it does have its draws, but if it was such a hassle honestly, most civilizations would have simply farmed instead of beginning to raise animals for food.

I have a theory on why PETA, MADD and Greenpeace are going the directions they are lately. It's a little controversial and will probably make people angry, though, so I'll wait til I finish reading the rest of this thread's replies and see if anyone got close to where I was going first.



What I will say is that for the past 6 months, in an entirely unrelated move, I named my D&D goblin PC "Eats a Kitten". I got the idea from Tarol Hunt's webcomic, (which is great, but I don't recommend reading until he finally establishes a weekly update schedule he'll actually stick to). I was thinking about how one would play a goblin PC, where they'd live, what they thought was important, etc. It occurred to me that goblins typically live in places near human habitation, but not necessarily well traveled, places where they could take advantage of the refuse humans leave lying around, but not have to confront them directly. Places like dumps and sewers. Places that were also great spots for abandoned animals to congregate. I figured any good human dump has rats, rats attract feral cats, and both breed in the wild like crazy. So, these would be like livestock to the average goblin. So, in my PC's backstory, my goblin thief has just survived a competitive eating contest with a rival tribe for control of a portion of the nearest dump. He won by eating an entire kitten by himself. Now he's ready for bigger and better challenges, it's time to take on the world.

I am, understandably, more than a little disappointed that PETA has now made his accomplishment mundane. Curse you, PETA, for ruining D&D for me.
