NPR article on PETA's new campaign

Some days I really wish I could make this stuff up. PETA has decided to embark on a new campaign against fishing, (both recreational and commercial), by rebranding fish as "sea kittens". They've got a website and everything.

I have some thoughts on this, but they're long, so I'll go ahead and hold off on commenting until more of you get a chance to read and weigh in. I will say it's odd, but I think I understand it, and my understanding makes it even odder.

Looked through the archives and you're right... Omgwtfbbqkitten mentioned it in November. The difference is now the campaign has actually launched. Back then it was just considered. Somehow, the two intervening months didn't convince anyone this might not be the greatest idea. You can check out Alaska's reaction on that NPR link, I think the article links PETA's website where you can see the actual campaign.

When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover. And who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?

LOL I laughed at the second to the last comment towards the bottom. PETA focuses so much on saving animals, when theres actual INTELLIGENT LIVING people who need help much more than a bunch of fish -.- Seriously now PETA, get your heads outta your asses and realize that either we eat animals, or each other.......and in that case, yall are looking might tasty =Q...YUM!

This is old news, and means nothing. At most, I am knowledgeable to the latest in hippie-slang (and not the good hippies, either).

Aside, the title of "sea-anything" belongs only to genuine aquatic mammals, or species in which the male is responsible for child-birth (and really, that one's out of pity).

Do you think PETA will try to force carnivorous animals to eat Tofu next because it's cruel to Herbivores?

I mean forcing Humans out of the food chain is hypocritical if they don't force other animals that eat meat out of the food chain too.

I doubt they really expect people to start labeling them Sea Kittens. They do, however, know that doing something weird like this will get attention, which can only be good for them. People who are already vegan or vegetarian aren't going to stop because of this, and a percentage (however small) of people who aren't will be caused (indirectly or directly) to stop eating meat. It's a no-lose for them, really.

But it's not really as absurd as it seems. If they had the marketing/PR muscle to push this, it could work very well. It's very hard to eat something you perceive as a cute, living thing. After awhile, it actually makes it hard to start eating meat again, when you think of what you're eating in anything other than an abstract sense; I still have trouble eating animal products if I start to really think about where my food came from.

I agree. Personally, I think this is aimed at a younger audience. Look at the website, very cartoony looking "sea kittens". There is a point where kids start asking "Mommy, where does hamburger come from??" etc. and putting this type of face to the food would cause kids to go {No, thanks.}
