Okay, my frustration with Comcast has finally moved into take-my-money-elsewhere mode.

Anybody got any advice on who to use or who to avoid re: DSL? I've heard good things about Speakeasy, but that was years ago. I haven't really heard anything one way or another about any other companies.

Anyone have any experience with wireless broadband? I know my brother's been using it, and his service has been spotty, but he's way out in B.F.E. His only other options were dial-up and satellite. I don't know whether being within the city proper would be better or worse for this.

      Re: ISP Opinions

Embarqs customer service blows and I almost had to blow up their corporate headquarters to get DSL, but the service has been reliable since it started.

Satellite is only good if you only browse webpages and read email. It's latency is too high for much else.

Unless you can get Verizon FIOS, you're best alternative is going to be DSL.

Yeah, I'm pretty much settled on DSL unless someone could convince me to try wireless broadband. I know satellite sucks.

It seems my address is somehow problematic for most of these online service checks. Verizon standardizes the address, and then doesn't do anything with it, leaving me with just "No, I need to re-enter my address." Embarq is so far the only site that's provided me with a definite "No, we can't give you service" instead of "Wut?"

          Re: ISP Opinions

Embarq can't figure out if they can or can not give people service. Their site listed my address as yes. Their customer service said no. It went like that for 3 months until they called me and said they could. Then another customer service guy said no. It took another month to convince them to just damn well try.

            Re: ISP Opinions

Mhurron, how is satellite for things like file transfers; particularly torrents?

Anyway, I have U-Verse. It's ok if you can't get anything else, but I can't say I'd recommend it. The cable boxes, if you get TV service, are incredibly fucked up, and there are annoying software bugs every single hour I touch the thing; the router you have to use with them is similarly crappy.

              Re: ISP Opinions

I started with Comcast which changed to Time Warner when they merged or w/e, but I've been lucky so far. Five years and no serious complaints about the internet portion. I'm sorry your location sucks. If I had to try another company I would probably try VIOS or Uverse, but I don't have any solid evidence that those would be good. I just know people that have those services and they are not unhappy.

                Re: ISP Opinions

Satellite is fine for anything where waiting is fine. For games, VoIP or anything realtime or near realtime it sucks.

For downloads, you just ask a server to start sending stuff and don't really care that the request takes 2-3s to get to the server, it will eventually just start sending.

that's what I figured. Wasn't so sure how latency tolerant torrents were. thanks.

Dammit, Feba. I was actually thinking about getting U-verse. Internet is supposed to be faster and DVR is supposed to be less of a piece of shit than I have now (Sudden Link redid their guide/dvr interface and now it sucks). They make you use a certain router? Or modem? I have both and not sure how well my laptop will work with a different wireless router. Never could get my mac laptop to get wireless from my linksys router.

                      Re: ISP Opinions

                      it's a modem/router box. And it's very ungood.

And I have a very hard time imagining anyone profiting from a DVR shitter than U-Verse's.

I use Time Warner/Roadrunner and I won't change for the world. I pay for the Premium and have Turbo Boost and my speeds are insane. All 3 of us play FFXI at the same time while d/l'ing stuff on 2 more computers and surfing too. We've never had any major issues. I've had them out here about 5 times in the past 8 years. Outages are seldom (ironic cause I just had one last night lol). Customer Service is always spot on and absolutely painless.

I know that it varys for other areas because I've heard other people complain to high heaven. Also my son (Network Specialist) and I are very tech literate so many things other people can't do, we can so it helps lessen service calls. But some other friends in the area also have TW and aren't as handy and they absolutely love it too. I guess its best to find a forum that is local or join a local group on a place like MySpace and ask. It can vary heavily from city to city.

                          Re: ISP Opinions

My dykes-in-law had U-Verse for a while. They didn't have much to say about it one way or the other, but neither of them is all that tech savvy or anything.

Until it was time to ship the equipment back when they moved. AT&T apparently requires you to ship it back in some special box, which they have to send to you. They called every few days for months, and the company was always out of stock of these magical boxes, and refused to let them just send it in something else. Eventually, AT&T sent them a bill for the un-returned equipment. When they called to complain, they were assured it would be taken care of, and that the box was on its way. Weeks later still, the bill had been passed on to a debt collection agency (and thus a mark on their credit history). AT&T tried to convince them to just pay it off and they would be reimbursed when they sent the equipment in. They did eventually get the fantastic magical box of rectangular shape, but I haven't heard any word on getting the collection agency bullshit off their credit history.

Of course, this is just anecdotal. But their all-in-one-router-monstrosity just looked like a piece of crap to me. Huge and ungainly, and made with comically cheap plastic. I never saw it in action.

Meh, one I have now is supposed to auto-delete old stuff when it needs room to record new stuff. But I've missed a night of recording before because it decided there wasn't room and didnt want to delete any of the old crap. That and the dvr controls are ridiculously slow to respond. You hit fast forward and it takes a few seconds for it to comply. Plus no happy mediums between different fast forward and rewind speeds. Its either very slow or jump to the beginning or end fast. I think I hate everything about it.

Yeah, U-Verse is basically the same thing. Except instead of missing shows, shows will get cut off after a few minutes for no apparent reason. When you fast forward through commercials and press play when the show comes back, you get jumped to the middle of the commercial break and have to fast forward through it again, slower, and still watch most of the last commercial.

Trust me, you won't be happy with U-verse.
