  • LIFE - The power of the future!

    New clean energy initiative unveiled at Livermore lab - Inside Bay Area

    It's a long read, but worth it. I saw it on the news today and I couldn't contain myself. I really really hope this works, because if it does this means a real revolution.

    Nuclear Power Plants are already a clean source of energy, and if this works that just makes all the more incentive to build them;

    They generate a lot of power and the waste material would be collected to power the LIFE facilities! With all that clean (seemingly infinite according to the article and "The Governator") energy the U.S. would have more than enough to run the country and could easily export energy to other countries at a great profit I'd imagine.

    It's a long ways off unfortunately (2030 yikes) but what a world if it all goes well. This along with emission free cars should make for a very interesting future. It's nice to see a positive piece of news for a change don't you think?

    If the article only concerns reusing spent nuclear waste rather than just letting it decay in salt mines, this is hardly anything new. Heck, that was one of McCain's stances concerning what we do with energy. >.>;

        "Burning nuclear waste to generate energy would ease concerns about nuclear proliferation by transforming the waste into material too radioactive for use in weapons."

        Am I missing something? They're talking about fusing hydrogen atoms using lasers, and "wrapping" the helium with the burning nuclear waste. Its like they are using nuclear waste, lasers and hydrogen to induce a fusion reaction and creating even more radioactive nuclear waste.

          irc ways to refine nuclear waste into usable fuel, until the point where nuclear waste is a non-issue, have been around for a very long time... they just happen to be banned because they also happen to be a very nice way to create the material needed for nuclear weapons.

          Or in other words, the technology might be a nice idea, but it's completely irrelevant if it's politically infeasible to implement. I mean, ffs, there are people talking about mining the goddamn moon for helium isotopes found in the soil which they think could be a new energy source.

          mining. the. moon.

            I personally loved the mining moon/asteroids ideas(huge fan of High Frontier) if for no other reason that it would make space more accessible since you could go as a worker bee miner instead of a NASA astronaut, but the likelihood of those employment opportunities coming when I'm still young enough to pursue them isn't high.

                  All we'd need then are Space Colonies, Factions, and Gundams. On a sidenote "In space....no one can hear you secks....with boobs"

                      I couldn't read it... I got to this
                      "If successful, this new endeavor would produce endless megawatts of carbon-free power," he said.
                      and heard the Arnie voice in my head and had to stop.

                          In the TV bit I saw, Schwarzenegger said that this process if it works can generate enough electricity to power all the lights in the country 1000 times over.
