  • Where do you get your news?

With the election getting closer and closer, I imagine more people are paying closer attention to the news than they normally do, and I'm curious about WHERE you get your news. To be clear, I mean places that you get news from on a regular basis.

Do you get it from newspapers? (If you do, subscription or bought from stands? Do you buy based on the front page news?) Local TV News? National broadcast news? A news channel like CNN? An online version of a paper? (if so, do you only use the free parts, or do you have a subscription?) Do you get it through sites like Digg and Reddit, or Fark? Comedic news like The Daily Show? Do you get all your news through word of mouth? Blogs (as in, not personal ones)? Do you use RSS Feeds, or go to the website? For that matter, what's your homepage?

I usually go to google.com/news or yahoo news. From there if I see a interesting topic I usually go to a link from there to like CNN or MSNBC. I also occasionally look at our local news channel websites (abc12.com/weyi.com/fox2news.com, etc.) to see whats going on locally in Michigan. I'll also sometimes look at the local newspaper website mlive.com to see what's going on in Michigan. However, most of the news I like to read is tech news so I check out PCworld and digg. If I know something is old news and about a particular subject or person, I'll check out wikipedia.

Honestly, if I bother to look at all: Comedy news, because underneath the satire, I can pick up on the issues without having 4 'experts' on the topic over-shouting one another until I can't figure out what the hell I'm listening to.

Homepage is my forum. I rarely visit anything outside of a few forums these days.

Re: Where do you get your news?

My iGoogle has feeds from Slashdot, CNN, GoogleNews, and Reuters. I frequently visit Reuters anyway because as a non-American media source it tends to give a different perspective.

I also check Kotaku frequently for video game news.

And when I feel like having a good laugh at the retarded, ultra-biasness side of journalism, I check out FOX news. MSNBC is almost as bad.

          Fark.

I stay away from the news around elections, far to much stupid going on.

Yo! (I can't be bothered to explain myself in sufficient detail right now, so for now, think more or less the same situation as Telera.)

I have no homepage: just the tabs I saved from last session + today's MC.

Forgot about the radio, I listen to a morning show on the radio and they talk about random topics between laughible topics.

This was one of the sadder topics of the morning

Re: Where do you get your news?

I used to mainly get my news through word of mouth and Daily Show/Colbert report, although lately (mostly due to the election) I've been going more to other sources. I use Google News, customized to display local news, as well as some other personal interests, in addition to National and International news. I get news on polls, as well as the election in general, through fivethirtyeight.com, although I've started looking at Drudge Report when I'm bored sometimes. I go to joystiq and their associated sites (nintendowiifanboy.com, dsfanboy.com, pspfanboy.com) for most of my gaming news, with a hint of IGN, and of course you guys.

I used to watch CNN and MSNBC, but the bias on all of the televised networks is incredibly annoying and I stopped trying to listen. It's much more bearable when people are just up front about the fact that they're dealing in opinion, and not hard facts. That and it would be nice if the 24 hour networks would realize that people hate listening to someone who is vaguely connected to someone argue with someone who is vaguely connected to someone else argue over stupid shit. I don't need to listen to ten minutes of Uptight Bitch A and Stuckup Ass B trying to twist what is supposedly an argument about Candidate X's tax policy into a stream of talking points. Seriously, if you haven't watched these, do sometime. You'll know it when you see it. The newsman will ask something along the lines of "So when Candidate X said thing Y, did he not know what he was talking about, or did he misspeak? Or is he actually insane?" and the surrogate will say something along the lines of "Oh, of COURSE Candidate X doesn't really think that, this is just another attempt by Candidate Y to try to distract people from Talking Point 3. Candidate Y cares about Talking Point 3, and that's what the American People care about too, Tom." It's fucking insane, and it sounds practically the exact same on both sides. (Democrat surrogates, especially people who are actually politicians in elected office, instead of 'Campaign Strategists', seem to be better than Republican surrogates, in my opinion, but there are decent ones on bother sides. Mostly they're annoying as shit, though.)

I'll be getting TIME and Wired through some Magazine Subscription fundraisers for kids of family and family friends, though I'm not a regular reader of them and haven't been previously.

                        Fixed.

TMS, I recommend Google News. It still has plenty of election coverage, but you can turn most of it off, and customize your feeds so you get more esoteric and relaxing subjects.

Or just Fark.com, they're all about the not-news.

Re: Where do you get your news?

CNN, Fox (for the "super right propaganda machine" everyone talks about), and mainly Drudge.
Funny thing about Drudge is he gets people from both camps talking about how biased he is for the other side.
The more I use drudge, the more I like it. He hits the important shit, has plenty of "flavor" reports for the lighter side of things, and there's not a lot to it so its easy to use.
Had nearly 800million hits in October, so he must be doing something right.

By the same logic, Miley Cyrus is a musical genius.

Drudge's reporting is awful and stupidly biased, and oftentimes just plain irresponsible or deceptive. I know I only look at it to see 'what the other side sees', same reason I occasionally look at fox news' website.
