Woman Slain After Refusal to Cook Hamburger, Police Say

An 18-year-old Northeast Washington woman was fatally shot last week after she refused to cook a hamburger for her alleged assailant, according to sworn statements filed in court.
The victim's mother also refused to cook a burger before the killing occurred, according to the statement.
The affidavit was filed to support a request for an arrest warrant for Terrence J. Jones, 19, of the 3500 block of Jay Street NE, who was arrested Saturday in connection with the death of Tanganika Stanton.
Stanton and another woman were shot Thursday in the 4900 block of Grant Street NE. Jones has been charged with second-degree murder.
The affidavit filed by police said a witness gave this account:
Before the shooting, Stanton was in front of her house, talking to someone known as Terrance. Stanton was eating a hamburger. The visitor asked Stanton to make a hamburger for him.
"No," Stanton replied.
The visitor then went to Stanton's mother and said, "I asked your daughter to make me a burger."
The older woman also refused to cook one. "I don't cook food for people I don't know," she said.
The visitor became angry, made a call on his cellphone and left the area.
A second affidavit quotes another witness. According to that witness, Stanton said, "Mom, that boy's back and he's got a gun and he wants to talk to you." The witness said a "large volley of gunfire" was heard from the front of Stanton's house.
Police said they were called to the block about 5:30 p.m. and found Stanton with a bullet wound in the left shoulder. The front door of her house had been peppered with gunfire.
She was treated in a hospital emergency room but died of her wound, police said.
