      Re: I survived Hurricane Ike

I think it's supposed to mean someone who freaks out a lot, over very little things possibly. Like you would be a spaz, TGM, by freaking out about not knowing the definition of the word "spaz."

Ike carried a storm surge typical to a category 4 storm. Furthermore, on the Integrated Kinetic Energy scale recently proposed by NOAA HRD's Dr. Mark Powell, Ike was damn near equally powerful as Katrina at landfall (5.0 v. 5.1). Too, this storm had the largest footprint of tropical storm-force and hurricane-force winds anyone has seen for quite some time.

This was not just a spring shower or some poncy borderline hurricane. SHUT THE FARK UP until and unless you get your facts straight.

Spazz, glad you survived, but in the future you probably ought to have better plans for evacuating successfully.

          [edit]

Ike makes a direct hit on Galveston, Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog
Category 2 Ike is larger and more powerful than Katrina, Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog
Like every headline, it only grabs eyes if its ZOMG SENSATIONAL.

Ike was not anywhere close to recent powerful storms, and your own links say so.

Lets see what the good Doctor had to say:

destructive storm surge potential. Ike's pressure fell rapidly last night to 944 mb, but the hurricane did not respond to the pressure change by increasing its maximum winds in the eyewall. Instead, Ike responded by increasing the velocity of its winds away from the eyewall, over a huge stretch of the Gulf of Mexico. Another very unusual feature of Ike is the fact that the surface winds are much slower than the winds being measured aloft by the Hurricane Hunters. Winds at the surface may only be at Category 1 strength, even though Ike has a central pressure characteristic of a Category 3 or 4 storm
Cat1/2 Surface winds, winds aloft stronger. Surface winds damage, wind higher drives the storm. You got a Cat1 on the ground. The pressure in the storm dropped but the overall force of the storm did not increase, it just got bigger. This allowed for two things, you get more time with the wind and rain and ---

Ike's huge wind field has put an extraordinarily large volume of ocean water in motion.
But that only damages the coastal regions. (I've heard this before, oh wait "The only people that were in any real danger were those who lived right on the coastline").

But we haven't got to the best part yet, the "EVERYBODY PANIC" statement -

The amount of water Ike has put in motion is about 50% greater than what Katrina did, and thus we can expect Ike's storm surge damage will be similar to or greater than Katrina's
Storm Surge. Just storm surge. Ike wasn't more damaging, more powerful or even as powerful as Katrina, which BTW, wasn't even the most powerful hurricane in recent memory to hit the US. That particular record goes to another hurricane in the 2005 season, but I bet you can't name it without looking it up. It just covered a higher area because instead of becoming very powerful it just got large. It moved a lot of water. Again "The only people that were in any real danger were those who lived right on the coastline" and those people were under mandatory evacuation.

The whole panic was fear mongering for ratings.

          Next up we have -

Integrated Kinetic Energy scale recently proposed by NOAA HRD's Dr. Mark Powell, Ike was damn near equally powerful as Katrina at landfall (5.0 v. 5.1). Too, this storm had the largest footprint of tropical storm-force and hurricane-force winds anyone has seen for quite some time
Anything can seem more dangerous when you change the rules. Ike was a rain storm compared to what were real major storms. Katrina needs to stop being held up as some gold standard of powerful storms (it's not even in the top 5), most of the damage it caused were caused not directly by the storm, but by stupid decisions made before and after it had come and gone.

As for your other claims, several powerful storms would like to have a word with you -

          Largest Atlantic Cyclone -
Hurricane Gilbert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hurricane Floyd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You might think 1999 is 'quite some time' ago, but Floyd is going to be remembered by a whole hell of a lot more people for a lot longer then Ike will be.

And just to remind you that there is a world outside the US
Typhoon Tip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ike just wasn't that remarkable, it wasn't even a major hurricane when it landed.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

            Re: I survived Hurricane Ike

I am warning people right now .. .. .. I will not let this thread turn into a "I know more than you" battle. If that happens I will close this thread without any hesitation.

Regardless of what people have to say about "I think this storm was worse" and all that shit, to the people who were in Houston and in the surrounding areas that were hit... It felt pretty damn real and pretty ****ing insane. Enough said.

                  Re: I survived Hurricane Ike

I got the nickname when I was in 1st grade and I forgot to study for a spelling test. I started to freak out because if I got an F my parents would have killed me... (and I still believe that to this day lol)... Well, the teacher looked at me and said "Dont be such a spaz!" My friends and I didnt really understand what that meant so we thought it was cool! So they all started calling me that and it has just stuck with me since then due to my spontaneous outbreaks of random thoughts or gestures. Since then it has been modified to include the double "z" but it still has the same meaning.

So... yeah... Its just something I learned to live with lol. I am 21 years old and my own brother doesnt even call me my real name. He calls me Spazz! Hell, even my girlfriend calls me Spazz!

The rain fell so fast from the skies and would pierce into the ground like bullets. The earth around you would shake for only a second, but only to be followed by an excruciating crash of trees and power lines. Sparks would fly through the air as transformers would crash into the roofs of houses or on the streets. And it would be at this moment that you feel lucky that you didn't live 10 feet in either direction... yet somehow... nature always has a way of putting things into perspective. We may have dodged the agony of trees, but the water was still rising on the streets. The power lines that fell turned the streets into rivers of instant death for any who dared. With all hope lost and the gut feeling inside telling you that your time has come, you grab your cellphone to make one last call to your loved ones... and the storm has torn any line of communication from you.

Finally... a glimmer of hope! A single bar of reception! You quickly grab your phone and try to call someone... anyone.... Even though the cellphone towers were being ripped and dragged from the ground, the ability to hear even one word from someone you love somehow brings a smile and tear to your eye.

Ike has since past and yet the worst is still yet to come. There are entire neighborhoods still under water and the number of people who lost their lives are still being counted. In a lot of areas... for every 10 houses, there is only 1 left standing. Gas stations are completely out of fuel and Grocery stores are completely empty. Fresh water is scarce and electricity will not be back on in the greater part of Houston for another 4 weeks.

Just keep in mind that I appreciate the all the prayers... But please, do not stop the prayers because of me. This terrible storm has left so many people worse off than I am.

Hey man! I was wondering about you the other day if everything went okay. I actually left town after the storm due to power loss in my area =(
