GameStop: Digital Distribution Won't Overtake Retail Until 2020 at Earliest - Video Game News, Video Game Coverage, Video Game Updates, PC Game News, PC Game Coverage - GameDaily
Digital downloads may be on the rise, but GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo isn't worried about the impact of digital for at least another dozen years.
by James Brightman on Monday, September 08, 2008
"Between the PC and the prevalence of connected consoles such as the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, digital distribution in the video game industry is becoming an increasingly popular way for publishers to deliver their games to consumers. In addition to smaller titles on Xbox Live or PlayStation Network, we're beginning to see more full-scale games available for download as well. Given the file sizes of some of these several gigabyte behemoths, however, downloading a full game can take a very long time.
That said, there are some who believe digital distribution will overtake or even replace retail game sales in less than 10 years. GameStop isn't concerned one bit, though. CEO Dan DeMatteo told us in a new interview that it'll be at least a dozen years or more until we see the real impact of these digital downloads.
"The first digital distribution was Napster and it was illegal. Let's just start there. The software publishers are afraid to death of piracy. Once a full game is lying on a hard drive, there's the potential for piracy. Aside from the games, the bandwidth, etc., our studies have concluded that the network won't be in place to do digital distribution of full games until 2020 to 2025," he commented. "And that's using today's size, but as consoles get more powerful, games get bigger. Right now, a 30GB game with your best T1 line is about 72 hours to do it."
He also argues, contrary to the popular notion that by sidestepping retail publishers are saving money, that digital distribution ends up yielding less money from a final sale.
"Microsoft and Sony are the gatekeepers for their consoles. And if you're a third party that should scare the hell out of you because that's the only way to get to your customer. They'll take 10 to 15 percent. Video game publishers sell me games today for $48 wholesale. If they go direct to the customer they'll probably get about $30 for them. They'll get less for the game if they bypass retail," he 00said."

Re: For all the Gamestop haters out there...
Lol i dunno...some of their used games are actually not so bad if you just shop around. Look at the disc quality, the box and the manual..and dont be stupid lol.
I picked up a bunch of games for way cheaper used and they work fine with the exception of Street Fighter Alpha Anthrology(had to bring it to GameCrazy for $2 disc fix). But since then the game used has always costed $30 used instead of the $20 in total i paid.....
That and MGS Collection is never anywhere but in GameStop...
Although i would never buy a used console..thats just too many factors put in to even consider outside of a department store. Games though are fine imo. I dont see whats wrong with GameStop.

Re: For all the Gamestop haters out there...
As a consumer i find nothing wrongSo i will continue to shop there unless i personally see otherwise though. Used games are the bulk of my games these days, and i am at the moment, satisfied with their services and selection.
As for the MGS collection, i rather like to buy it on hand than online, but around here, i havent found it in anywhere else than in a GameStop(or their affiliates like Funcoland).

Re: For all the Gamestop haters out there...
It doesn't bother you that they are laughing in people's faces when they buy back their used games for a pittance of the price in cash and turn around and sell it for 3 times what they gave the person? Oh wait they will give you more if you take in store credit....thats right give their money right back to them so they make even more money!
It doesn't matter to you that the game you are buying could be stolen?
Did you ever go in and buy a brand new game and be told that the only one left is the open box on display? "Oh don't worry, we just took it out of the box and put the box out there for display. The game is brand new." Guess what? Most of the time the game is used. They gave some sucker $13 for it and just sold it to you for $60. That doesn't bother you?
Oh wait...stuff like that doesn't bother you because it doesn't impact you personally. Carry on.Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. Re: For all the Gamestop haters out there...
Also used games are just plain shitty for developers who put hard work into their games. Not worth saving $5 to get a subpar quality package and give devs the short end of the stick.Last edited by Pai Pai Master; 09-10-2008, 11:01 PM.PSN ID - PaiPai Gamertag - PaiPaiMaster Steam ID: Pai Pai Master

Pre-owned games market "damaging" single-player games - Braben // News
"Pre-owned games market "damaging" single-player games - Braben
David Braben, chairman of Frontier Developments, has revealed his belief that the pre-owned games market is "damaging" to single-player titles, and could be replaced by a legitimate rental market.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Braben explained how the second-hand market for games skewed sales results and suggested an alternative rental system, involving the supply of rental discs to retailers at no cost in exchange for a cut of a store's rental profits.
"I think it's really damaging to the single-player experience," he said. "Games like BioShock and Assassin's Creed, where they're perfectly valid games, but once you've played them they go into the pre-owned section."
"The sales don't reflect the actual sales of people playing them because someone has gone out and bought, at almost the same price, a pre-owned copy because they couldn't get an original. It's very frustrating that they don't carry that stock any more."
The Frontier Developments boss said he believed retailers shouldn't be afraid of the idea of replacing the pre-owned games with rentals, saying that there are a variety of business plans to consider.
"A genuine rental market would be fine," he explained. "There may well be other business models - and the problem with video rental, as I understand it, was prices were really high. I think that was the issue.
"Maybe there are different ways of participating in that. Maybe it's not a higher price, maybe we get a share of the rental, which actually might be better where the copy is even cheaper, or even free," he added."Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. GameStop employees nabbed in undercover sting : Local News : Memphis Commercial Appeal

GameStop, which bills itself as the “retail destination for gamers around the world,†became a fencing destination for undercover officers in the Memphis area earlier this year.
Authorities said today that eight current and former employees of the world's largest video game retailer have pleaded guilty to theft of property charges for buying video games purported to be stolen.
GameStop, which has 18 locations in the Memphis area, sells new and used video games and buys used games from the public for resale, a practice the company now is temporarily suspending.
“GameStop takes this situation quite seriously,†said Rory Rhoads, GameStop’s Regional Vice President of Stores. “We are pleased to partner with the ALERT Unit and have taken very deliberate steps to improve our operations. Specifically, we have suspended our cash-for-trade transactions in Shelby County and DeSoto County, Mississippi until February 2009.â€
The ALERT Unit or Area Law Enforcement and Retailers Team was formed in 2004 by retailers and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
Rhoads said GameStop has conducted extensive training of employees, reminding them of the policy against receipt of stolen merchandise and helping them identify such items.
The undercover operation documented illegal sales between April and June at GameStop stores at 1680 Union Avenue, 6223 Winchester Road, 7539 Winchester Road, 4465 Poplar Avenue at Oak Court Mall, 5043 Park Avenue, 2760 N. Germantown Parkway, 1262 Southland Mall, and 2878 Wolf Creek Parkway.
Each of the eight defendants charged pleaded guilty to theft of property under $500 and was ordered to serve one year on diversion, a form of probation that can end with their record being cleared.
The defendants, none of whom had any previous criminal convictions, are identified as Carmen Meacham, 41, of Bartlett; Brandon Blackwell, 20, of Memphis; Andrew Cline, 23, of Cordova; Jeffrey Ford, 29, of Memphis; Patrick Hitt, 21, of Cordova; Corrie Morris, 24, of Memphis; Marcus Smith, 19, of Memphis; and Thomas Wells, 30, of Southaven."Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. @ GrandMom
That last news story you posted...
I find it hard to actually care without knowing the full details of what exactly they did.
All it said is they pleaded guilty to a charge. And, something about purported. Whatever that means.
Edit:
Wish I could've seen that video before it got removed.
