No. It's not. It really isn't.

Wh... what? We're simulating the CONDITIONS, not the act itself. As I understand it, these conditions actually exist IN NATURE, and the primary reason for the LHC is so that we can know when and where things are going to occur, and put those giant ass detectors there to monitor it.

And the reason we're doing this is to discover what the hell happened. Here, watch:

And as Caspian pointed out, you're assuming that gods exist in the same way that toasters exist. Something you can touch, something measurable; and there's no reason to believe that. You're also assuming that the laws of physics would apply, which is actually pretty silly.

Do gods exist? No. Is there any good reason to believe gods exist? No. Does anything disprove gods? No.

Science shows people facts, religion shows them concepts. Facts might be all some people need to stop believing in invisible sky fairies. But the existence of facts does not disprove the concept. For example, we know that life has evolved over time. Evolution is fact. However, that does not disprove the concept that humans are a 'special creation', as there is no way to disprove that evolution was not guided in some way. See Kent Hovind's $250,000 Offer -- specifically:

Consider the import of the phrase from the footnote "these five major events took place without God". That might look, at first blush, as if it means "without resort to miracles as an explanation for natural events". But, in fact, it requires production of empirical evidence that God had no role at all in cosmology (including the Big Bang), astrophysics, abiogenesis, genetics and whatever else Hovind means by "the general theory of evolution". This calls for the logical impossibility of "proving a negative". Few, if any, atheists would go so far as to say that there could be empirical evidence that God was never active anywhere at anytime throughout the entire history of the cosmos.

Science doesn't need to disprove gods. Science works on the principle that you come up with a concept, as religions do, and then test it to see if it's correct. For example, let's say that I think my ceiling is five feet from the lowest point to the highest point. I have a hypothesis, so I get a ladder and a bit of tape, and I measure the distance. This would either confirm or deny my idea. Rigor might need more controls; for example, using a level to make sure that the height does not increase from one end to another; or testing at various times throughout the day to account for any warping that might occur as a result of heating and cooling.

    Visual aid the above paragraph:

Anyway, as I was saying, science doesn't need to disprove gods. Science doesn't work by disproving things. It works by proving things. If someone wants to say, scientifically speaking, that they believe in some god or gods, it is their job to prove that god. See Russel's Teapot, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Invisible Pink Unicorn, et al.

So there's fanboys all over this issue, like real actual people who think this whole thing is somehow going to disprove the concept of God? I thought it was about some degree of simulation of what happend after the big bang, on a really small level.

I mean, if we're going that direction with this, why don't we get those morons to prove or disprove ghosts first, then move on from there. If we're going to bizarrely shift this to disproving spiritual entities, let's start with the most basic ones and move on from there.

I do believe in ghosts, I never met one or got scared by one, but I did leave unsolved rubik's cube locked in a room and came back home to find it solved. Freaked me the fuck out, man. I don't mess with it now.

Well, there are people that think Spore is an evil plot to teach children evolution. So yes.

There are irrational atheists. Actually, in my experience, they're worse. I have an idea of why, something along the lines of them thinking their ideas are validated, but I'm not quite sure how to articulate it.

Indian girl commits suicide over 'Big Bang' fear - LHC - MSNBC.com

            Updated 11:03 a.m. CT, Wed., Sept. 10, 2008

BHOPAL, India - A teenage girl in central India killed herself on Wednesday after being traumatized by media reports that a "Big Bang" experiment in Europe could bring about the end of the world, her father said.

The 16-year old girl from the state of Madhya Pradesh drank pesticide and was rushed to the hospital but later died, police said. Her father, identified on local television as Biharilal, said that his daughter, Chayya, killed herself after watching doomsday predictions made on Indian news programs."In the past two days, Chayya had asked me and other relatives about the world coming to an end on September 10," Biharilal was quoted as saying."We tried to divert her attention and told her she should not worry about such things, but to no avail," he said.

For the past two days, many Indian news channels held discussions airing doomsday predictions over a huge particle-smashing machine buried under the Swiss-French border.
The machine, called the Large Hadron Collider, was switched on on Wednesday, at the start of what experts say is the largest scientific experiment in human history.
The machine smashes particles together to achieve, on a small-scale, re-enactments of the "Big Bang" that created the universe.

Leading scientists and researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, said the experiment was safe. They dismissed as "pure fiction" doomsday predictions that the experiment could create anti-matter, or black holes.

But in deeply religious and superstitious India, fears about the experiment and the minor risks associated with it spread rapidly through the media. In east India, thousands of people rushed to temples to pray and fast while others savored their favorite foods in anticipation of the world's end."There were a thousand more devotees yesterday as well as today compared to (any) other normal day," Benudhara Sahu, a temple official in Orissa state, told Reuters.

Many women and children rushed to temples and observed fasts as they prayed for deliverance, officials and witnesses said.Assurances by scientists and the media that nothing would happen counted for nothing for housewife Rukmini Moharana."I visited temple, prayed to god," Moharana said. "I am observing the fast for safety because god can only save us."

                  OMG!!!

                  Im pulling out my hair!

The current level of irrational hysteria is making me fugazzi!

                  This girl KILLED HERSELF?!?! W T F?!?!?!
I think the saddest part is there is NO hystera in certain other countries - like China and Russia - why not because they have an adequate science education to at least understand that there is no danger. We had a Russian Exchange student with us last year, and tho he was only 14 he had to take Sr level classes, because he was so much further along than our kids here.

And he wasn't a genius at anything but chatting up girls

If only we had a good bit more scientific education in this country maybe people wouldn't be so freaked out.

I also blame the media for sensationalizing the rantings of a crackpot.

This is the reason why the girl killed herself and nothing more

As for the education systems, I don't think super advanced particle accelerators are part of any high school curriculum

That young lady had many more issues before this I'm sure. The media didn't cause her to do anything, her illness did.

                        exactly

even if it did kill us all... and it won't... it'd sure be a lot faster and less painful than pesticide of all things

Someone over on the shoutbox at gamepolitics.com transposed some letters and created the "Large Hardon Collider." You can imagine what the device does. We expect it to reveal the major phalluses in our perception of the universe.

Irrational athiests think do thier ideas are validated, but usually regurgitate the same shit they heard from some other atheists all the time and then dodge questions like a politician when presented with questions they can't answer.

Things like "The Bible is full of mistakes."

"So, what are the mistakes, chapter and verse?"

They won't be able to tell you because they generally are incapable of articulating thier own thoughts and doing the research. He probably couldn't tell you shit about the Bible other than the names of the first few books of the Old Testament and the New Testament. They just know some other guy said the Bible was wrong about some things and even that guy didn't go into any details about it. He just sounded really authoritative when he said it, before going on about how it causes all the wars and woes of the world and sounding like a broken record in general.

Best athiest I ever knew just told me he was an athiest and left it at that. No rants about religion or science. Best people of any belief leave it that brief and keep politics that short as well.
