Thats a wonderful story for all you Americans who the the world hates it for no reason.

so as long as politics are around (or in the case of salt lake corruption go go USA) there will always be a 5 ring flag flying somewhere every 2 years
Salt Lake City has a weird form of corruption. I imagine that it takes place in other locations as well, but hell, I live here and I'm sensitive to it. It's a bit cliquish. I'm not sure what angers me more, the holier than thou cliquish corruption and subsequent righteous facade or the total BS let's run them for all they're worth and then take some more and hide it so that hopefully nobody sees that shit corruption.
There is a plethora of political BS that the world hates us for. Personally, I wish we would get off of our high horse as a nation and either stop screwing people while pretending it didn't (isn't) happen(ing) or screw the shit out of people and give them an erect middle finger. At least the world will know where we are coming from. From a personal standpoint, we ought to stop screwing people, deal with them honestly, and then when someone screws with us, we ought to remind them who we are. But then again, my sky is a different shade of blue and that country doesn't exist where my feet tread.
I can't wait to see how we fuck the olympics up in 2012. lets hope a Wembley stadium doesn't happen. will be interesting to see how the ancient London transport system copes, granted they have built a new railway station, but if anyone from outside the UK attends this in good ole blighty, then practice, queing, complaining, standing up, getting wet and getting ripped off with extortionate prices.
Oh and just a small thing MrMaego, the Olympics is every 4 years not 2.
1994 lillehammer norway, 1996, atlanta georgia, 1998 nagona japan, 2000 sydney australia, 2002 salt lake city, 2004 athens greece, 2006 torino italy, 2008 beijing china, 2010 vancouver canada, 2012 london england.
Every 2 years an olympic games is held. While the specific nature of either summer or winter alternates a torch is lit every 2 years.
Also in south western ON, they no longer to A,B,C,D on term work it is graded on a chart of 0-4 because to many moms and dads got mad when johnny would cry over his C

You left out the key fact of SLC: bribery was the normal state of affairs for getting the games in your city. Wasn't that we invented it, just that we got caught doing it. The Senate and laughable IOC internal investigations both found that members were regularly bribed by bid committees. Give us some credit here, your point shouldn't be that Americans are the only dirty ones, instead we're dirty just like the rest of you.
The reality of the game no longer resembles the idea it was founded upon back when the games were restarted in Europe. It's no longer a celebration of peace and togetherness that it was envisioned to be. Probably because the original wasn't anywhere near this concept, either, but in no small part to the committee itself.

Yeah, I could see that happening. It sounds like something that people would do in this messed up world. Got a link? I'd like to read about it.
...insert standard gripe and moan about olympics <here>.
Heres a few things that have cancelled sports day in the UK....
"The head teacher of Holmbush First School in Shoreham, West Sussex, has written to parents to tell them that the annual event has been called off to avoid accidents. Rebecca Jackson told them that the surface of the school's playing field could be "too dangerous" for the traditional sack, egg-and-spoon, wheelbarrow and three-legged races. She said there were concerns that cracks and holes in the surface could cause the young pupils to "trip or fall"."
"Children have been banned from taking part in sack and three-legged races at their school sports day in case they hurt themselves.
The decision has been slammed as 'completely over the top' and of no benefit.
Teachers at John F Kennedy Primary in Washington, Tyne and Wear, dropped the popular events after discussions with Beamish Open Air Museum, where an Edwardian-themed sports day is being held today. Teachers at the John F. Kennedy Primary school have scrapped the sports day sack race fearing children will fall over Children taking part are to dress in period costume and play old-fashioned games as part of the school's centenary celebrations. Events such as running, hopping and throwing ping-pong balls into buckets will take place, but it was decided that the sack and three-legged races were far too risky."
Oh and Mr Maego, there are 2 Olympics... THE Olympics and the winter OLYMPICS, botha re seperate events, both are totaly differentt and share no sports, there fore each one is every 4 years, you can;t say every 2 years as their extreemly different, you can only say that if it the same events.
They should cover all sidewalks with polystyrene foam because it's too dangerous for kids to walk on them when there's always the risk they can fall and hurt themselves.
Also need to buy kids Spacesuits to protect them from the air and other things outside the house.

I know, right? It's just ridiculous...kids get hurt. It's part of being a kid. I beat the shit out of myself on a daily basis when I was younger, got cuts and scrapes and bruises on every inch of my body and I turned out all right. Parents are way too overprotective nowadays. We're gonna end up with an entire generation of people that have never had to compete for anything in their lives, never had to actually work for anything because it's all handed to them, to protect their poor "self esteem". Never dealt with the pain of a scraped knee or bump on the head. Never had to deal with coming in last place because now there is no last place, we're all winners! Never had to deal with any adversity at all.
Then we can turn them loose on society and watch everything fall apart. Yippee!
I'm a slow motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints...

Those irregularly extra pointy air molecules can do a lot of damage.
I think that its not so much of an over portection as much as it is a "not being around" protection. Most familys now a-days have both parents working 9-5's just to break even each month. They rarely see jimmy and sally save for dinner.
Kids spend an equal amount of time away from home as Mom and Dad in the care of others. Teachers are considered glorified babysiters around here and babysiters are usually the stay at home mom who takes in 5-6 kids during the day. The parents worry because they don't see how the events unfold because they can't witness them.
I was a summer camp consellor and even then parents would write in letters saying suzzy and johnny couldn't do this or that because they were not available incase of serious injury.
I think MA and PA need to look at what is more important a child who is missing out on the golden age of fun, or a paycheck that usually leads to families tearing themselves apart just to put bread on the table.
In the end it all leads back to capitalism and the decline of the western world. Don't have that stuff in china, if ma and pa say chan or zhang can't play balance beam today ma and pa disapear and chan and zhang move on to the next family. (which is why they are winning all the god damn gold medals)
