  • Olympics 1st thoughts

ok this is a rant to provoke some thoughts. i want to say, that i was raised with a strong american spirit. i have watched the olympics from the time i was born until now. i believe in what the olympics is suppose to represent and be about. men dropping their weapons and doing battle mano a mano.

i want to start with some of the early events. Equestrian? wtf does this have to do with the olympics and athleticism. how much of an athlete does it take to sit on a horse in coattails and a top hat? the event, i wish i could remember the name, consisted of a ring the size of a basketball court. all they did was ride around it, up and down side to side, no running no jumping. some of the riders were nearly 70 years old, i can see how thta qualifies them as olympic athletes. it was explained during competition, that the horses had a minimum age of 8 years old. the reason for this was it took that many years of training for them to develop the strength to be able to compete. is the horse the olympian or the rider? if you ask me its the horse. so WTF does that have to do with the olympics and athletes? if they want to have equestrian events in the olympics, i have a solution to the human athlete side of this.
Rodeo! bull riding and calf roping, now these guys are true athletes and would make for a better show and draw a bigger audience. just fyi im not from texas and have never been to a live rodeo.
Jousting!!! now this is a real olympic event that would draw the largest crowd ever. you have the horses only as vehicles not as the athlete. now you add some excitement and skill and the chance of serious injury and possibly death.

now a non equestrian event that needs some tweaks. Fencing what id the point of this. this event is not fencing, its the milton bradley game "Operation" combined with tag. 2 people in full chain armor from head to toe, wired with electronics. if you get touched it lights up a light for a score. if you didnt watch this event you wont understand how dumbed down this is. they dont do it like in the movies where they are both swinging and blocking, attacking and parrying, no they stand ona narrow carpet and try to swat at each other and not get hit at same time. if they are going to have fencing, take off the arnor sharpen the swords and let them go at it. when you draw blood you get a point. now we have an event worth watching.

Badmitten, now this is a sport of great importance. Funny and Extreme Videos - Badmitten Skills - Funny Video Clip - KillSomeTime.com

    WOW.

Equestrian events - the one to which you are referring is called Dressage. If you think its easy to get on a horse and make it do all of those things in a specified order, well, Im here to tell ya, it ain't. Once they get to the obstacle and show jumping courses the real challenge of Equestrian events becomes clear. People (and horses) DIE in this sport, (2004 Athens games 3 horse had to be put down with broken legs and five riders ended up in hospital, two with serious injuries) it's how Christopher Reeves broke his neck. And experience matters, so riders average much older, which in turn tends to make them a bit frailer than a michael phelps. Mastery of riding animals is one of humanity's oldest sports. So...

And fencing. Ever done it? it's harder than you can possibly imagine - and it's only in competition that they wear all that gear, much lesss in training which is why so many of them were so heavily scarred facially for so many years (until the '80s when safety tech got much better) - again this is an ancient sport whose traditions go back hundreds if not thousands of years - the Heidelberg School is still considered very good, tho recently our American women have been showing well (we swept Saber). Again this is an extremely physical sport that requires speed and concentration of unbelievable amounts at the Olympic level.

Synchronized swimming - now there's a strange sport (strange here having the meaning of useless), since when is doing an Esther Williams number a sport - granted I know it's hard and takes years of training, but its just weird.

Or Curling (winter games) now THATs a cracked "sport".

So basically you started a thread to demoralize the athletics of Olympic sports you don't consider "manly" enough or "cool" enough? The Olympics are not about drawing crowds and making money with top-ratings. The Olympics are a display of humans from all around the planet putting their differences aside and coming together to compete in the largest sporting venue on the globe. For you to blast certain sports because they "ain't real sports to us Texanzz" is truly and utterly ignorant.

You've missed the entire point of the Olympic games. Please, just go watch football or something.

Hey hey heyyyyy now, direct them at a sport I don't like, please.

Also, China is cleaning some house w/ homecourt advantage so far. An holy shit @ the 4x100 swim relay thing, I'm not big into swimming but that was a fairly fantastic sports moment in general.

FYI, sword fighting in the movies is beyond unrealistic. Everything I've seen on actual historical 'to the death' sword fighting said most fights lasted mere seconds. There were very few moves involved and not these cinematic 10 minute sword fights which in real life would leave both sides dead from exhaustion.

And yeah Callisto, that 4x100 relay was fking epic. I was freaking out.

I had always thought that myself, just the sheer deadliness of a sharp object swung quickly combined with the natural limits of human reaction time would mean someone would get a killing blow in fairly quickly, within 5-6 swings at the most I'd think.

The early Olympics were about nude men having footraces with their dongs flapping about. If you're into that sort of thing cool, I'm sure there's plenty of content on the internet available to suit you.

What's that? China lied and hippies didn't actually do what they claimed they would? Inconceivable!

...and did I honestly read a post about how fencing matches should be decided by the first person to draw blood? This is the freaking Olympics, not the roman colosseum.
