Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace - Google News

Honestly, unless I'm leaving the country, I highly doubt I'm going to use air travel anymore. It's amazing how in eight years it's gone from a good and somewhat enjoyable experience to total shit. And now they're trying to pass a law against using your damn phone? It's ridiculous.

So I haven't flown in a couple years. I didn't think FAA allowed using cell phones during flights because of the incredibly small potential risk that it could theoretically disrupt the airplane's instruments.

Bonus: US Airways is now charging $2 for water and sodas on all flights.

As it is, that is the case, yes, but since that has been disproven or made irrelevant (I don't know the specifics, but I do know it's not a risk anymore), and the addition of internet service to aircraft (VOIP), they're trying to make it into a federal law.

Smoking laws, yes, obviously smoking (especially in confined areas) is dangerous to the health of those around you. Not to mention the obvious fire risk. All this is really doing is trying to legislate courtesy.

You can use a phone as soon as the plane has achieved the correct altitude. Take-offs and landings are out.

You may be thinking of Mythbusters, Feba. They did one about cell phones and airplanes, and determined that no make and model that was then available to the market (or any that had been available to the market, IE they got phones from a number of years before) had any determinable effect on any of the planes that were being used, from the tiny little business jets to the big jumbo jets. This was done before the iPhone was released, I believe, and I think it's been a little over a year since the episode aired. And, of course, the FAA wouldn't let them test in-flight, so all the tests were done on the ground.

However, they figure that it is more of a preventative measure than one based on any evidence: it is *possible* that some day a phone may come out which produces enough of a signal to interfere with the electronics of the plane.

              I am not.

The EU recently lifted a ban on this; they're going to have a helluva lot more evidence than that.

Last I checked, every cell phone (actually, I'm pretty sure every single electronic device period) has to comply with FCC regulations that make sure they don't cause exactly that type of problem.

"im going to need a tray"

On all flights in and out of the Uk you are to keep phones turned off at all times, wi-fi devices switched off at all times and if you are to use a laptop, you have to proove ocne at teh correct altitude (you can't use it till then) that you have your wi-fi switched off.

This is stupid. If a wireless cell phone ever comes out that produces enough RF interference to mess with a plane's controls, it'd give you insta-cancer inside your ears or something.

Shocking, but I agree with Feba on this. This is nothing more than the government making laws to force citizens to act/behave a certain way. This is similar to the law I read about (forget exactly where at in this here country) legislating that youth's pants be kept at a certain distance from their waist. I'm sorry, what?

Too bad we don't live in a socialist society where you can make laws based on bullshit like this. I know you just spent an outrageous amount of money to get to your destination a few hours sooner, but that guy on the cell phone over there... Yeah, he did too. Don't like? I think this is yet another one of those things where if the private company wants to ban it or put restrictions on it on their flights, then thats fine.
But its really none of the government's fk'ing business.

Cellphones were never allowed in any flights I ever took and I didn't think it was weird at all.

                          What's the big deal?

                            The reasoning.
They used to not be allowed because they were considered potentially dangerous to flight instruments. Apparently now they're considered to pose no threat but Congress wants to ban them because some assholes can't talk quietly on the phone and have no consideration for others.

Honestly, as loud as it is on flights, how the hell would you even begin to hear whats being said over the phone?

                              I'm glad actually.

"You didn't answer the phone! You must be cheating on me!!"

"I WAS ON A PLANE OK!?"

                              "Oh... Ok then *giggles*"

                              Meh, I'm going to bed.
